Earlier this week, I posted that NYC was urging residents to drink tap water, and you may unknowingly be doing just that. Yep, although you might have already suspected it, Aquafina bottled water is just tap water.

The news story isn't really that Aquafina, made by Pepsico, and Coca-Cola Co's Dasani are both made from purified water sourced from public reservoirs. Nope the news story is that Aquafina will be more explicit about that the bottled water is made with tap water. Look for the words "Public Water Source" on the bottles.
This is a concession to the growing environmental and political opposition to the bottled water industry. Critics of the bottled water industry argue that all those bottles add plastic to landfills and require a lot of energy to produce and ship. A lot more than just turning on the tap. Plus the industry undermines confidence in the public water supplies, which is ironically where Coke and Pepsi get their water.
And you? Are you trying to reduce the amount of plastic bottles of water you drink? Let me know in the comments section below. I will read them while I sip out of my Nalgene bottle.

I KNEW IT!
I have never liked their water and my friends always call me a 'water snob'.
I buy cases of evian and fiji (whatever is cheaper that month) and I take a bottle in the morning and refill it all day. So instead of using 10 bottles a day, I use 1 then recycle. Its not much, but its my way to help
-The water snob
1My parents buy gallons of water at the store and reuse the jugs by filling them up at the store the next time they need water. When I go somewhere, I pour the water from the jug in the fridge to my Nalgene. It takes a good 6 months for a jug to start wearing out (with the normal wear and tear of my family!)
When I'm at school, I keep my Nalgene full of tap water in the fridge. It's cold when I'm ready to go, and I don't have to worry about throwing away a bottle.
2I drink the water that comes out of the water tap on my fridge. It's cold, and tastes great. I don't see why I should pay $1+ per bottle of water for something I get virtually for free from my tap, anyway.
3I drink tap water, and my company provides filtered tap water for us as well (I live in Germany). But Germany seemed to have solved the bottle recycling problem by putting a 25 cent deposit on almost all plastic bottles sold here (and 8 cents on some glass bottles). Twenty five cents seems enough of a reason to bring your bottles back to the store so EVERYONE recycles the bottles. The system's not quite perfect yet (and I know I do my share of complaining about it) but people get used to it and it just becomes normal. Other countries, most of all the US, should really follow Germany's recycling efforts.
4I use a Brita filter at home and we have Alhambra water at work that I drink from a glass.
5It's such a rip-off; I just put tap water in a sports bottle.
6I think the water here in LA tastes awful, but I have been thinking more and more about the waste of the plastic water bottles. I think at home filtering units, or even delivered water jugs that get recycled are better than individual water bottles.
At work, I just refill my nalgene bottle from our water filter system.
7Tap, Brita, sports bottle. End of story.
8i stop drinking that a LONG time ago.
9i use to dump the water out and jus use the bottle for filtered water. people thought i was weird but i kno tap from filter. i drink dasani.
I'm not surprised. I don't have a problem with tap water anyway...I usually just drink tap.
10I do try to use my Nalgene as much as possible. When i DO buy water in bottles, I usually re-use the bottles a few times and then recycle them.
The only water that is not tap water is water that says spring water, bottled at whatever source.
11Just use a Brita! save the plastic...
12I re-use plastic bottles. Currently, I love the style of the arrowhead sportshead bottles(although I find arrowhead water disgusting) and I keep one for months at a time while frequently washing it of course. I just fill it up with water at home which is sparkletts and head out the door, and that only takes a few seconds more than grabbing a new bottle of water everytime I head out and it's more enviroment friendly.
13i use tap water. i fill up a reusable bottle (nalgene or a metal one) with water the night before and stick it in the fridge then its cold in the morning to take to class with me. i refill it at university througout the day as well.
14Hey Fit - I read that Dasani is like this also and their rebute is that they state on the bottle that is it 'purified'. What exactly does that mean? Is it run through RO systems? Just add minerals? Any idea?
I happen to love Dasani, but don't purchase it that often. So this was a bummer to read. I think it's a good thing though for those that *only* drink bottled H2O. I typically just drink RO water when at home and filter water from my refillable water bottle at work.
15I admit, we go to Costco and buy cases of bottled water, but we are slowly trying to make the change by using our Brita filter more and filling it up in reusable bottles. I felt compelled to change after doing some research and reading a few of these articles. Check them out for yourself:

Aquafina and Dasani taste terrible. There is *such* a difference between them and the spring water brands. Brita water even tastes better than Aquafina and Dasani. I like sparkling water better than both!
17I think you can get used to the taste too. In high school I HATED Dasani water, but that was the only water vending machine we had. I actually hated all bottled waters because even though some other ones tasted better, I could taste the plastic from the bottle itself.
Now I don't though. Go figure.
18i grew up with well water, which tastes great, but i've always been suspect of tap water, and i worry about the effects of flouride, especially on women and their reproductive systems. so much as i feel guilty about the money i spend and the waste i generate, prefer to drink bottled water.
but dasani and aquafina have always grossed me out. yuk.
19not at all surprised. i hope this hurts the sales of their water.
i buy bottled water every now and then, and refill it will tap.
20In Memphis, our tap water tastes AWESOME, and I actually don't like spring water, so if it has to be bottled water, I like Dasani and Aquafina, because it tastes like our tap water. I pretty much knew that it was the same water. I reuse bottles all the time.
21Buying bottled water is so expensive, and with the environmental waste, I always drink tap. Unless I am treating myself to sparkling! Plus I have to get my fluoride on!
22I really hate tap water, I can totally taste the chlorine. Im sure Aquafina (PepsiCo.) isnt the first to do this. Sooo effin wrong.
23sometimes i have a huge adversion to tap water and sometimes i like it better depending on where i am. i hate DC water, Perth Australia water, Martha's Vineyard water, but i LOVE Charlotte, Durham, and NYC water. So weird. When I hate the water I grab a brita, or put ice in the water. Ice helps A LOT to combat taste.
24All your paying for is the plastic bottle/cap and the stupid little label! Invest in a Brita water filter and a reusable watter bottle (Nalgene).
25While it's true that the water comes from a public water source, it is then further purified, through 7 additional steps I think I read. Seems pretty clean to me- definitely cleaner than the DC water that comes out of the tap here! I keep a water filter at home, but do used bottled water when I'm out and about. I will continue to drink Aquafina actually (and recycle, always of course!)
26I don't have a particular brand of bottled water that I like, but I do know that I can't stand Deer Park.
27Yea, I was at a hotel last week and my father got a bottle of aquafina and the lady at the desk said "now you know thats tap water right?" I was actually kind of confused but now I understand a bit better
28i used to be bad with drinking water bottles all the time. i always recycled..but now i'm trying to minimize my impact on the environment so for about a year now i use my brita and a nalgene bottle. i bought a brita jug for home and work so its super easy. i very rarely buy bottled water now which makes me feel better and its cheaper!
29All lies im drinking it right now and its pure you asses!
30Aquafina is bottle tap water from Hayward, CA. Hayward get their water from the Hetch Hetchy. Which is why Hayward has the best tasting tap water in California. Makes sense to purify water from a great water source. Now everyone can enjoy Hayward water!
