I see people talking on their cellphones at the gym all the time. This is something that I could never do for various reasons (coordination issues and falling off the elliptical, personal hygiene, gym etiquette, etc.) but many people clearly do not feel the same.
That being said, I am curious about you guys...

It's a borderline pet peeve of mine when I see people at the gym doing it!
1I did it once and I'll never EVER do it again! First of all it's very rude to the other people at the gym who are trying to concentrate on their workout. Secondly, I'm trying to concentrate on my own workout. I can't do that and talk to someone on the phone. I can barely talk while on a cardio machine. Let alone have a conversation on my cell phone.
2i've answered it a couple of times, to say yes yes no, im at the gym call you later... and sometimes i'll text (talk about coordination! texting and elliptical).
for the most part, i find it a good time to catch up with tv (i never watch outside of the gym) and just plan out things in my head.
3This is my number one pet peeve; in NYC, people do this all the time. Can they really not wait to call their friends back in 15 minutes?
4not at the gym. it's rude to the other people, and i'd feel weird having them hearing what i'm saying. sometimes i go out for a walk outside and talk on my cell phone, sure.
5I usually don't even bring my phone. Occassionally I'll do it it if I'm waiting for my husband to get off work or something. But its quick; not a conversation. A girl in my spinning class will stop her workout and leave the room to answer a call from a friend. It drives me crazy.
6I do NOT. But people at my gym have and it's extremely RUDE and ANNOYING. There is one girl who gets on the elliptical and takes out her phone and talks throughout her entire "workout". I have seen it several time. It's unbelievable.
7I don't even bring my phone. Workout time is ME time!
8At my gym, sometimes people are talking on they're cell phone while power walking on the treadmill or flipping leisurely through magazines while biking, or even looking through work files....I think it's hilarious! But the truth is, exercise routines do get boring and also New Yorkers love to multi-task!
9I don't get signal in the gym. Working out is my time (either at the gym or exercising outdoors). I will bring it on long run days, but it's only for in case of an emergency.
10If someone calls that I am waiting to hear from then I will answer. Most calls I ignore but if I do answer I try and make it quick. I have also gone for walks and called someone for a chat.
11One day I had decided to run the longest I had ever on the treadmill. A girl popped up on the treadmill next to me and talked on her cell phone the ENTIRE time she was on the treadmill. I could have shoved her off. I don't think she realizes that she wasn't getting a good workout if she could carry on a 30 minute conversation non-stop.
12So annoying... I really don’t mind if people stop while doing weights or machines, but doing it excessively is just plain rude! There’s a difference between answering important calls and just wasting air.
I can't stand when I'm at the gym and I see women on their cell phones. Most people feel compelled to shout when they are on their cell phones, and the women at my gym are no different. It's just rude and I wish people wouldn't do that. I usually don't worry about getting phone calls, not many people call me, so I leave the phone in my locker and check it while I'm leaving. It's just about being nice.
13If I could be bothered to work out, I doubt I'd be on the phone.
14Others talking on their phones is my #1 pet peeve at the gym. Not only are they not getting the best workout, but they are helping ruin mine!
15I don't, but I think I must know someone who does judging by the heavy breathing calls...
16I think you're cheating your self if you text and talk on the phone while working out. You NEED to set aside time for your body & mind each day. And when you are texting and chatting while working out, you are depriving your self.
plus, I think texting and/or talking while working out at the gym is rude. Yes, even texting is rude. Nobody is that important that they HAVE to take their phone with them onto the gym floor. In fact, most gyms have a "no cell" policy.
17Ok , now I rarely ever talk on my cell phone when I workout. But I will answer it if someone I need to speak with calls...like my girls school or whatever. Now this is what I dont understand , how is it rude to most people workin out? And thats giving someone alot of credit for ruining your workout...come on. Most people I see workin out at my gym have IPods on and never pay attention to the noise around them. Talkin on the cell is no different then talkin to a workout buddy , or is that rude as well? Because I get a hell of a workout and im usually talkin to one of my friends there.....I personally really dont care what anyone else does, I do my thing then leave. I guess im laid back......
18Workout time is MY time! I'd never bring a cell phone unless it was needed for safety during a remote run or hike.
19i have a friend who every time we walk spends at least 75% of the time on her phone, i may as well be going by myself!
20i HATE when people talk on cells in public places (unless you are moving) like elevators, etc. I would NOT ever do it at the gym, in fact, my gym has rules against it unless it's an emergency (ie: babysitter, something like that)
HATE HATE. >:(
21Very very rarely, and only if someone has called me. And only if I'm at the gym, never when I'm working out outside.
22Why do people even bring their cell phones in to the gym? At least leave it in your locker. I laugh inwardly at women who talk on the phone during cardio, because they are ruining their entire workout. Haven't they ever heard of RPE? If you can carry out a convo while working out you are cheating yourself and annoying everyone around you. How people can be so disrespectful and feel such entitlement baffles me.
23I do sometimes, but only if I am alone in the gym (I workout at my apt complex) and am making plans for that night and need to figure some stuff out. But I definitely get off as soon as possible, breathing hard in my friends' ears is not sexy!
24Other people who are on their phones don't usually bother me. If they want to ruin their work-out, that's their business. I however don't want my convo's to my loved ones heard by strangers. Plus, when I'm working out, its my time and I really don't want whoever I'm talking to to hear my labored breathing more than what I'm actually talking to them about.
25I leave my phone in the locker. I find it incredibly rude and distracting to have someone talking/yelling on the phone next to me. I listen to my IPOD so at least I can tune out people around me for the most part.
26I turn my cellphone off and leave it in the locker! It's nice to not see or hear that damned thing for an hour
27Oh god, no.
28Talking on the phone cheapens any activity, especially working out, because it makes you lose focus. I find that focus really is key.
29There's also a big difference in *answering* the phone while at the gym and *talking* while you are working out. I can see just picking up and saying to call back, i personally don't ever take my phone but it doesn't bother me if others do. But I hate it when girls are on a machine and they have the weight at like 15 and are doing sets of about 20-100 for absolutely no reason at all b/c they don't get how to work out anyways, and at the same time they're chatting it up on the cell. I mean if you can talk while working out, it should clue you in that you may neeed to up the weights a bit. It's called a work out after all!
30I don't talk on the phone when working out because I can't focus, which leads to me not working out as well as I can; not enough force put in. But when people call ME they just don't get "I'll call you back later" into their brain! It's just annoying.
31I have a client who is committed to running every morning but also has a business to run. Each night he schedules a list of calls to make on his phone. In the morning he takes a jog and completes all of the calls that he can. Now that I know him well enough I can tell when he is jogging and talking to me, but before that it was hard to tell. I guess it goes well with the adage that you should be able to carry on a conversation while exercising.
32Never. I tend to push myself pretty hard while working out and I can't imagine holding an entire conversation with someone.. I need that air for me!
33You are obviously not working out hard enough if you can carry on a conversation on your cell phone.
people like this just look ridiculous.
34i walk around the neighborhood and on trails, so i take my phone for safety. If someone calls i need to talk t, or was waiting to return my call, i take it, but i don't talk for long so i can walk harder. I answer whenev by boyf calls though because he has started working a ta different job, 12 hour shifts, and he can't call while at work.
35I don't go to the gym, but I never talk on the phone while working out. Working out has become sort of like a meditation session to me, and I'd hate for it to be spoiled by talking on the phone.
36I never bring my phone in! The gym is MY time and I don't want to be bothered!
I HATE when people waste using machines and you seem them half-assing their workout and just talking/texting on their phones..
The only thing I play with when I'm working out is my iPod, juggling from music video to music video.. that's about it!
