In a time crunch, some of us may head to Jamba Juice for a smoothie lunch substitute. While you are certainly getting plenty of calories in your smoothie, is it filling you up like a solid lunch would?
A recent study says not so much. In fact the subjects who drank their test foods ended up eating more than those who did not drink their foods. Part of the reason could be that drinking your food does not cue signals that let our bodies feel full, such as sight, smell, chewing and pressure of food in the stomach.
I know a lot of you guys follow Slim Fast or will make (or buy) shakes to replace a meal but do you feel just as full as you would if you ate the solid equivalent?

Usually, it wouldn't, but I guess it depends on how rich and dense the drink is.
That said, I tend to follow a certain "rule" I made for myself that is based on EATING your calories, not wasting them by DRINKING them and not feeling satisfied.
*it wouldn't = liquid calories wouldn't fill me up
Depends....if I make a smoothie with bananas and strawberries, and milk (and sometimes yogurt) then that fills me up. A drink from Starbucks does not. It all depends what you are drinking as liquid calories and it is important to add them to your calorie count of the day
I am having a protien shake for lunch because today is a crazy day and i am not going to be able to have anything else--- I make it like a pudding consistancy though because if it's liquidy i won't feel full...
When i go to tropical smoothie i usually get full. I t usually keeps me full to dinner time but sometimes i don't eat. and their smoothies are low-fat
beer and smoothies fill me up.
Depending on the drink, it may fill me up as much, but it does not satisfy as long as the solid food would.
No way.
Isnt it gross some people drink shakes while eating their meal? that made me think of it. lol
If i get a smoothie for a meal, I'll pair it with something like banana or pumpkin bread so that I get the feeling of eating something of substance along with the smoothie- it fills me up and helps me feel as though I haven't left anything out of the meal.
Smoothies usually do a good job of filling me up, but I never substitute it for a meal.
I still crave for solid food after my smoothies.
It doesn't seem like it.
Liquid calories don't fill you up like solid calories. I don't think people associate liquids as having as many calories as solids, so they tend to drink and eat, which will only double your intake. So, skip the smoothie and just eat the powerbar (or whatever)!!
I have been drinking soy protein shakes mid-morning to replace breakfast and hold me off until a later lunch. They are yummy and easy to make (soy protein, soy milk, frozen fruit, almonds, and cranberries--for texture!)The protein really does the trick for me, it keeps me full.
I do think of beer as liquid bread, and do find it really filling. I do NOT use beer as a meal replacement.
I end up wanting solid food after my smoothies/liquid calories
My rule is not to drink my calories. I would rather eat them!!!!!!!!!
There's some variation. Skim milk fills me up more than juice and juice fills me up more than soda. But none of them fill me up the way solid food does.
Not at all. I just *inhale* liquids....so I stick to water or tea.
I love Robeck's smoothies they are very filling, especially the Reg. size, I'll get the jr. size if I'm just craving sweets (much healthier then ice cream) but I usually grab one before my workouts, It gives me the right amount of protein and boost of energy and I burn it off while I'm doing my cardio
Smoothies or coffee will fil me up. If I need to eat something quick and I am driving or running around I get one of those. But I try not to do it too much.
definitely!
Sometimes, with things like Jamba Juice, I feel full right away. That full feeling goes away pretty quickly, though.
High protein shakes fill me up like a meal.
Thick drinks and hot drinks fill me up. Things like soy milk, orange juice, etc, do not.
*Great Tip: Add a tablespoon of hemp protein to your milkshake, you cant taste it, and it's healthier for you!
The medium sized jamba juice will usually fill me up but it's more of a very high calorie snack. I would never use it to replace a meal.
juices dont, but coffee can curb my appetite for until late afternoon on a work day.
I think this was the reason I never liked soups. I dont feel like I've eaten anything.
Generally, I would say no; however, I make my own breakfast shakes that are high protien (whey) and fiber (psyllium husk and ground flaxseed) that keep me satisfied for 4-5 hours. For me, that is longer than any kind of cold cereal with milk.
I find that smoothies consisting of milk, fruit and protein powder make me MUCH fuller than eating the foods seperately. I feel almost like I am going to burst after drinking a smoothie with (3 Strawberries + 1 Banana + 1 c. Milk + 1 Scoop Powder) If I ate all these foods seperately, i'd still be hungry. I think it hits your hunger senses faster.
