I don't know about you, but since skin cancer is the most common kind of cancer in the U.S., I want to do all I can to protect myself. 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and more than 90% of skin cancers are caused by sun exposure. Here are some ways to help protect yourself.
- Avoid sun exposure from at least 11 am to 2 pm, when the sun's UV rays are the strongest. If you can, I would avoid the rays from 10 am to 3 pm.
- Wear sunscreen when you go outside - even if it's cloudy or cold out. Getting a sunburn is not only painful, but a person's risk for skin cancer doubles if he or she has had 5 or more sunburns.
- Create you own shade with an umbrella, sun hat, and a lightweight long-sleeved shirt and pants.
- Do I even need to tell you to avoid tanning salons? Use a self-tanner instead.
- Check your moles regularly. If one seems like it's changing shape or color - get it checked out by a dermatologist ASAP.

I always avoid the sun. I only work out early in the morning or late at night. I had really bad sunburn when I was 11 or 12. Like sheets came off my shoulders and back.
1I have to wear sunscreen in my foundation cause my face just turns red, everywhere turns red. I'm Scottish-German-English-Polish. I'm so pale.
6. Be ready to take shi* from your friends/famiy when you come back from a cruise still paleish cause you wore 45 SPF and re-applied often enough to not get burnt to save your skin health...
2Rule #6, try to lie in the sun on the equator from 11am to 2pm on a hot summer day without sunscreen...perfect way to keep from getting skin cancer!
3Yes, my loved ones constantly tease me about my "vampire-type" glow, which isn't *remotely* as pale as Nicole Kidman but to a Latin family that lives in the sun it's absolutely ghastly.
Oh, and make sure to understand a lot of sunscreen doesn't even work. The recent news reports show that a lot of companies have been lying about SPF protection. Best bet: stay out of the sun during peak hours.
4#3 should say to wear a long sleeved rash guard (shirt you wear in the water) with built in sunscreen. I'm super pale and burn after 1 minute. I can spend all day in the water and don't burn when I have it on. Just make sure you have waterproof sunscreen on your hands and don't wash with soap! I learned the hard way.
5Cravinsugar: just think, in a couple of years, all your friends will have wrinkled faces from sun damage and your skin will look fresh, healthy and young.
6interesting
7thanks for the advice! i don't want potato skin
8im extremely pale and burn easily..im over roasting in the sun hoping for a tan.
9People of all races should be sun smart. African Americans get skin cancer less frequently but die from it more often than other races. That's b/c it's usually not diagnosed until it's too late. I wear suncreen, even though I hate it!
