Most people in this country aren't getting enough vitamin D — adults and kids alike. Our bodies manufacture vitamin D when our skin is exposed to the sun, but we don't spend much time in the sun these days. And when we do, we wear sunscreen.

This hard-to-come-by vitamin plays an important role in our overall health. Not only does vitamin D help keep our bones strong, it helps prevent cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Added to foods like fortified cereal, milk, and OJ, vitamin D can be found naturally in cold-water fish like salmon, tuna, and sardines.
If you haven't already learned to love sardines, vitamin D could be the reason to open your heart to this sustainable fish that is also low in mercury. A half-cup of sardines provides 200 international units (IU) of the vitamin. The new daily recommended intake for vitamin D is for kids it is 400 IU, and investigation to whether the RDI for adults should be increased to 800 to 1,000 IU. Not sure how to add this fish to your plate? Try Yum's sardine and arugula sandwich. It's simple, tasty, and loaded with D!

begin sauces with them -- when you're cooking garlic or onions or whatever other base, add some in, and you'll get a really rich full flavor
1I have learned to love sardines! I put them on my salad and eat them with mustard! So easy to eat and so healthy!
2I just cant love them. When I was little my parents made me sandwiches with butter and sardines and I ate them but for some reason I cant eat them anymore.
3I have a fear of eating fish due to the bones. When you eat sardines, can you feel the bones crunching or anything? Do you chew them? I just don't understand how to eat them and what the texture is like.
4You can buy them canned and they're skinless and boneless. It's sort of like tuna fish in consistency.
I would just make sure they're wild-caught....
5Ugh, I just can't love them. I've tried them plenty of times and made them plenty of ways, but I just don't care for the taste and texture of them. I'll just stick to my vitamin D supplement for now, I guess.
6So to get the very minimum D of 1000IU you need 2.5 cups of sardines a day every day. As it is likely that you actually need 5000IU that's 12.5 cups, which will contain enough omega3 oil to stop the blood clotting properly.
Take the supplements made from lanolin it is easier.
7I love love love my sardines! Vital Choice Seafood has the best!
