One of the most uncomfortable occurrences when running is getting that awful pain in your side often referred to as a 'side stitch'. Since they have yet to figure out the exact cause of side stitches, there are several theories as to how to get rid of them. According to the American Council on Exercise, the pain could be a result of the jarring and pulling on the ligaments that attach the stomach to the diaphragm.
Here are some suggestions for getting rid of a side stitch:
- Reducing the exercise intensity level until the pain subsides.
- Breathing deeply through pursed lips.
- Tightening the abdominal muscles while bending forward.
Not working for you? It could be your liver, so check out more tips on how to get rid of them here.

If you often have problems with side stitches, I've found that having yogurt an hour or two before a long endurance work out helps tremendously.
1Yogurt you say...I will have to try that out because I always get this problem when I run.
2ahhhhh i hate side stiches!! Call me crazy but rubbing my side makes me feel better.
3My mom would always tell me that they happened if you ran with your mouth open (IE - no panting, breathe through your nose). Ive always wondered if it was just an aesthetic thing with her, but it seemed to work.
That one was only for prevention though. After it happens, my old PE teacher gave me a tip (similar to #3). You stop, squeeze the side where the pain is, bend forward, and breathe out deeply. It actually works, but then you have to do it again ten seconds later

4i gte them almost immediatly after i start jogging..will try these tips.
