If you're anything like me, you have one (maybe two) cups of coffee a day. I used to drink my coffee black until I realized that adding a bit of non-fat milk to my morning coffee was an easy way to get a little more calcium in without having to drink a plain glass of milk. However, now I may be making the switch to lattes.
It is being reported that U.S. women consume on average 6 ounces of milk a day, which falls short of the 24 ounces needed. What's even more interesting than that? 40 Percent of Americans drink coffee, but only 6 percent of adults drink coffee with milk. Starting to see the correlation yet?
Adding milk to your coffee is a great way to get more calcium but if you want to go a step beyond that, order a non-fat (or skim) latte. Here's why: One 16-ounce skim latte provides not only 45 percentdaily value of calcium , but it also delivers 25 percent daily value of protein and 35 percent daily value of vitamin D as well as potassium, magnesium and vitamin A. So that super chic co-worker of yours - the one that only orders non-fat lattes - may actually be drinking it for her health, not just to look cool.
Now I'm off to Starbucks to order a non-fat latte -- and you, do you drink your coffee with or without milk? Tell me in the comments section below.

I thought I read once that caffeine blocks the absorption (at least partially) of calcium. Urban myth?
1I stopped drinking starbucks because of the fat
i gained alot of weight lately
2milk is not really good for you. that recommended allowance is coming from an industry that makes money off of you buying milk! no other mammals drink milk after infancy. www.notmilk.com
3that being said, i just had my bowl of cereal and i'm having my morning coffee and skim right now!
I can't drink coffee without milk, it's too bitter. I love iced brewed coffee from starbucks and then I add milk to it. Mmmmm
4Try this....sugar-free vanilla non-fat latte (if you don't mind those sugar free syrups)
5i drink my coffee, in the morning, with non-fat chocolate milk. it's delicious!
6that sounds really good, krenelk. i'm gonna try it sometime. chocolate milk HAS to be less fat and calories than "coffeemate" right?
7with milk
8Loooooove the coffee.
9I drink my coffee with half and half, and have my lattes with skim or soy milk.
10I loooove to have coffee in the morning!
Can't do Starbucks every day though - too much $$~
11It's so unnecessary to consume milk to get calcium, especially when there are so many other ways to get it that are more digestively friendly to most people than dairy is! Why not inform us about ways to get calcium that don't include milk?
12This reminds me that I need to take my calcium supplement and do that more regularly. It's a real pain to be lactose intolerant and hate the taste of milk in general. I try to get some soy milk in with my cereal but I really don't like the consistency of any milk. Ugh.
13How does soy milk compare calcium-wise?
I like the taste of SF vanilla soy lattes, and I like that it has more protein (fills me up). I know there's more fat, but a little fat now and then is not a bad thing (good for hair, nails and skin!)
14Did this study take into count the OTHER sources of calcium that women consumed? For instance, consumption of yogurt has gone up dramatically in the past few years.
I don't drink milk, but I get enough calcium with yogurt, almonds, and other sources, plus a daily supplement as reassurance.
15I don't really like coffee, but I LOVE non-fat lattes, especially after having dinner at a nice restaurant. It's coffee, but it's milked up, and the calcium is a healthy bonus
16I miss starbucks! since preggo, I can't drink it b/c of the caffeine. I'm sure I could order a decaf, but the fun is gettin a white choc mocha (nonfat, no whip of course!) but man...I miss it. My regular coffee I drink w/ creamer, usually vanilla or hazelnut.
17i dont drink milk..at all, cant stand it.
18Supplements are the way to go to make sure you're getting enough calcium. You can drink only non-fat, but even skim milk has a lot of sugar, which a lot of people don't realize. Plain non-fat yogurt is also delicious with some fruit.
19Well that'S good news. I love milk and love lattes!
20Yes, I LOVE my Starbucks, and my lattes!
I always get non-fat milk, and I love it. I
usually use creamer in my plain coffee (fat free half&half), but I like lattes a bit better than just plain coffee. There's something about that tasty espresso kick that makes the
difference
21Actually... lol.. if you look at my chatterbox, you will see that I went to Starbucks this morning!
I just finished my latte a little bit ago... and it was delicious!
22Love love love plain coffee, strong, with 2% or nonfat milk, and nothing else. Lattes are yummy too, but if it's caffine you're after, then you won't find much in a latte (35 mg per shot of espresso, shot count based on size you get; a cup of coffee has around 100 mg).
p.s. Spice up plain coffee with some ground cinnamon on top of the coffee before you start the maker. Yumm!
23Adelka -- good idea on the cinnamon! That sounds tasty on coffee
24this isn't true. it's not an urban myth, caffeine really does block the absorption of calcium and other vitamins & minerals. sorry to break the news!!
25sorry--also forgot to say that doctors recommend taking calcium several hours before or after consuming coffee to make sure it's effective.
26In the morning I just have a pinch of cream. But in the afternoon if I need a pick-me-up (which is pretty much every day) and haven't had any other dairy product, I get a small non-fat latte.
27I love milk. but i'm a fan of mochas, not lattes. Still, lattes are cheaper, aren't they?
I also love yogurt!! And Kudos granola bars have calcium in them, too.
28Like we really need another reason to get Starbucks. I love milk and dairy products and drink plenty of lattes.
29i don't know too many people who say "oo i love milk." it's just not something many of us like. and yes, whenever i have a latte or drink like that, i tell myself it's okay because i'm getting calcium and such hehe
30Yes calcium absorption is inhibited by caffiene! It sucks but its true.
31I take my first cup of coffee in the morning black, but if I indulge in coffee in the afternoon or evening, then I'll typically go with a latte. I'm trying to be better about ordering them non-fat.
32venti non fat vanilla latte no sugar...that's my starbucks drink of choice...and also one of my guilty indulgences.
I at least gives props to starbucks for having a rather easy to use caloric chart systen on their site, allowing you to customize the drinks to how you have them. Dunkin' Donuts should take pointers.
33how about a decaf non fat vanilla latte...no caffeine to block the calcium absorbtion.
Latte = Happy
34An excuse to drink Starbucks?? Yay!
35Interesting, as the countries with the highest consumption of milk also have the highest incidences of osteoporosis.
Fascinating.
36Cows milk is for calves.
I was weaned of my species milk years ago.
yummy
37starbucks sugar free non-fat latte
my favorite, besides the frappucino light blend
This is pretty interesting - I drink my coffee black and have noticed that just about every person I know who drinks coffee takes it with milk, so that 6% surprises me.
38
I ♥ starbucks...such a fabulous and unique vibe comes from their wisdome and wit...
39I love skim milk. So good
40i LOVE my starbucks skinny vanilla latte. the vanilla gives it a special oomph! it comes in low-fat and non-fat and i always get the non-fat.
41I despise milk.
42I love Starbucks Caramel Latte with skim milk
