Modern slang has made its way into the fitness world, and if your vocabulary needs some pumping up, try adding these terms into your workout.
Hammies = Short for hamstrings — the muscles on the back of the thigh, as in "I'm going to go stretch my hammies."
Gun show = Muscular arms
Mirror Muscles = Muscles you see when you look in the mirror, namely pecs (chest muscles), deltoids, and biceps
Newbie = Someone new to the sport, or to the gym
Powerhouse = Core and sometimes core plus a booty squeeze
Resolutionaries = Folks that join the gym on New Year's Day and stick around for about a month
Spin head = Folks that wear full biking gear to spin class
Yogatude = Yogis with a competitive attitude about their spiritual practice
What is your favorite (or least favorite!) piece of gym or fitness slang?

Patrizia Pepe
Rochas
Mango
Spinhead is really funny, lol!
1I love saying hammies. It makes me feel like a muscle head.
2I love Yogatude
That's great !
3Yogatude is great! hehe.
4my fav tri related slang is "hardware" for medal
Ha! Yogatude abounds at my gym.
5I have to admit. I think I might be a spinhead. Once you ride with biking shoes and the convenience of the back pocket, it is hard to go back.
6Haha these are all pretty funny. I don't love "newbie" though. Its intimidating enough to first get into exercise or a new sport, no need for a snarky nickname!
7Ha! Spinhead and Yogatude are funny. I hate the "gun show" slang. Makes me wanna scream douche every time I hear it.
8"Work in" is one that confused me at first. I was on a machine and this guy asked, "can I work in?", like rotating in while I'm resting and vice versa.
9I'm with you Fit, lol. i'm becoming a spinhead
shorts (padded comfort), shoes (help
align legs to peddle stroke), gloves (sweat slip on handlebars) and I've been eyeing the bike jersy from my dance studio. -sigh-
I remember a couple times this guy came in full bike gear jersey et al including a camel back along with his water bottle and I thought that was strange. He later became one of my favorite cycle intructors
10Cycling shoes make a big difference - they enable you to pull UP as well as pushing down.
11Cycling shorts = necessary .. or at least they are on my road bike !
I wouldn't have included "newbie" in the list because that term isn't used exclusively at the gym.
12I kind of agree with petites. Nobody wants to be a newbie!
Haha I love "resolutionaries." But I hate the word "hammie"!
13I find the term newbie endearing. No one knows everything, especially when first trying a new sport or new activity. I feel I will always be a newbie when it comes to skiing, and introduce myself as such. It helps when asking advice, especially on forums. It is A-OK to be a newbie in my book — it means you're trying new things.
