A brick workout doesn't mean lugging around bricks while running. It's a term for back-to-back workouts of two different elements of a triathlon, like biking then immediately going for a run.

While there is no one way to do a brick workout, it is better to do the disciplines in the order you would in a race, so your body can acclimate to changing gears for the next physical challenge. This means follow a swim workout with a bike ride — sometimes I swim in the basement pool at my gym and sprint upstairs to an hour spin class — or take a bike ride then a run. You can use these workouts to practice your transitions, or simply work on increasing your endurance. After doing a brick workout, I find it quite satisfying to sing the line, "She's a brick house," over and over again.

Ah, the wonderful brick. I know a lot of triathletes who don't find a lot of value in them because the second training session tends to suffer if you go hard on the first -- the idea being that it's better to have a solid long ride one day and a solid long run the next.
Most of my bricks have a short second session - a 3 hr bike ride and 30-40 min run.
1and can I just say how excited I am right now ?! I leave for Rhode Island tomorrow morning for Rhode Island 70.3 - 1.2 mi swim/ 56 mi bike/ 13.1 mi run
2runningesq — have a rocking good time in RI! Sounds like fun.
3runningesq - Have a great time!
4I always have the Bike+run combo. Spin class followed by an outdoor run every Tuesday and Thursday.
5But on Friday, I normally have the Reverse Tri - it is just easier to run/bike then swim. 3 Mile Run then 45 min Spin class, then 1 hour swim.
Ha, I had heard this term but always thought it referenced actual bricks! Or maybe not bricks per se but weights of some kind. Too funny!
