You know I love a little word play, and "sharrows" might just be my new favorite portmanteau.

I have seen these arrows on the road for years but learned their formal name this morning listening to a radio program about San Francisco's new bike plan. Which sounds awesome, by the way! The share-the-road-arrows are painted on the road to help guide cyclists through designated routes and demarcate bike lanes. They also act as a visual reminder for drivers to share the road and to look out for cyclists.

great to see. i'm from London and a cyclist (a woman) was just brutally killed two days ago in a rush hour traffic, she actually got cut in two but a huge lorry. cyclists definitely need more respect and awareness from other drivers.
1Allytta, that is horrible.
I live in a town known for bikes on the road (Boulder, CO) and there is kind of a tension between bicyclists and drivers here with so many bicyclists out and about. Both drivers, and cyclists need to be conscious of rules of the road and respect each other. All you have to do is read our craigslist rants and raves to see the extremes of this tension.
Oh yeah, I never knew the term "sharrow" that is cute. I'll drop that knowledge bomb next time I am having cocktails I am sure.
2Well, I've seen these in Madison, which is a very bike-friendly community, but around here they are completely non-existent. People bike on the sidewalks because for whatever reason, it's not illegal here. It drives me nuts that it's so hard to bike anywhere around here...you're basically asking to get hit by someone.
3Got 'em in Asheville, NC!
