When buying a big-ticket item like an elliptical, it's a good idea to do some research. Don't fret though, because Consumer Reports can do the leg work for you. Their top pick is the Sole E35 ($1,300). This machine has an adjustable incline feature, which means you can really work your booty while doing cardio. While the pedals are adjustable pedals, the handles of the E35 remain stationary. Meaning you will have to do some upper-body work off the machine for a full-body workout. This elliptical comes with a heart-rate monitor chest strap, so you don't have to grab the handles to get the beat on your heart.
If having a piece of cardio equipment in your home means you have excuse-proofed your fitness life, the investment could be worth it. Learn what to look for when shopping for an elliptical from this detailed Consumer Reports video. Even if you're not in the market for one, it can help you determine which machine at the gym is right for you.

Wow, I may have to look into this one. I thought only Precor and Diamondback had machines with an adjustable ramp as well as adjustable resistance. I have a crappy elliptical machine right now, but I really would like to upgrade to a good one. I was considering a Precor, except that they start at around $3000. The Sole E35 has a much nicer price tag!
1I agree Spectra. I'm a Precor addict too. My knees can not handle the ellipticals where the handles are attached.. you have to "push out" to hard on those machines. A crossramp and adjustable resistance is key. I too might have to check this out!!!
