After reading The End of Overeating and learning the importance of avoiding bliss point foods, I reevaluated my relationship with Nutella. The chocolate hazelnut spread makes no pretense as a healthy food, but I occasionally pick it up for baking. The only problem being that I usually only use half the jar, and the rest sits in the cabinet calling my name. I end up eating it by the spoonful, not even bothering to spread it on a piece of toast. Not good. Needless to say, I am committed to baking without Nutella. If it's not in the house, I won't eat it. Tell me, what food tempts you beyond control? Have your figured out a strategy to deal with it?

Anything salty! Potato chips, french fries, and popcorn are the worst. And peanut butter - a jar will not last three days at my house. I don't keep this stuff in the house but when I am eating out I usually tend to overindulge on these things.
1any kind of nuts, macadamia, almonds, cashews, peanuts, and especially peanut butter. I can eat a jar straight, so keeping it in the house is definitely a test of my willpower. i've even tried buying the packs that are portioned out, but it's a total no-go.
2Pancakes and French toast, When I have them I like to eat a lot.Breakfast food is my weekness, but I don't eat it often.
3I've actually never had nutella, buteveyone raves about it.
Tempting for me are all kinds of Sandviches...I'm SUCH a fan...especially with fried Chicken, and Mayonese in it, but I try to go with the healthier Salmon ones
And M&M's (the yellow ones)...if I have a bag, I have to eat it.
ps: aren't there smaller jars of Nutella in America? we have these smaller ones which are not even half of a regular ones
4Oh my there are so many things! I have stopped buying Nutella for that very reason and I dont keep a lot of salty things because they make me want to munch. Anything snacky I do not keep in the house, just fruit and veggies and the occasional bag of sunflower seeds. I am with laellavita about nuts too, they are just just too good!
5Pretty much the only food that I can't control myself around is any sort of ice cream. If I have a box of it in the freezer, I can't just have a 1/2 cup serving and be done with it. I will eat a big bowl of it and still want more, but if it's not in the house, I won't usually crave it or anything. I don't eat it much anymore, but when I do really want ice cream, I either go out for a small cone or dish of frozen custard or I get an ice cream bar so I don't eat half of a 1/2 gallon box of ice cream at one sitting.
6Oh, and Fit, about Nutella--I tried it once when I was in Ukraine and I loved it so much that I knew that if I were to buy a jar, I'd eat the entire thing at once, so I haven't bought any since then. That stuff should be illegal!
7i am this way with oreos...my husband, too...i NEVER buy them unless i need them for a recipe or something...which happened last week, where i "accidentally" bought an entire extra package...i must have eaten 15 yesterday before i put the bag away...and now i'm thinking about them again
i get what i call "food envy," where i tend to crave whatever anyone else is having...i've basically stopped eating lunch with co-workers because i'm wayyy too tempted to get take-out and deli sandwiches when i do...this also happens when people on a tv show are eating...especially chinese food...i wonder if i have an actual psychological defect
8i have no self control over ice cream. i would finish a half gallon by myself in two days (!!!) before i started eating healthy. so i try my hardest not to even buy it, although seeing sales all the time makes it all the more difficult. i try to be economical with most grocery items and figure i'll buy the whole package instead of a single serving (ex: cereal for the morning), but if I do that with ice cream i binge on it. its almost scary how i really CANT stop eating once i start. =(
9Cereal & peanut butter. I had to stop buying both of them because I can NOT control myself.
10No control whatsoever with ice cream. Therefore I haven't had any in nearly a year. I don't crave it when it's not around.
11Chocolate... ice cream... anything sweet...
12Doritos! They call out to me...
13Cheetos - the puffy kind, not the crunchy kind! When I eat one, I HAVE to sit down and eat the entire bag, so I NEVER buy them. The same goes for Doritos and Tostitos! I only get to eat those like once or twice a year. I also feel really tempted by cookies, so I don't buy them - I don't love them like the Cheetos/Doritos/Tostitos, so I never eat them.
I also have to REALLY watch my peanut butter intake, or I would sit down and eat the entire jar by the spoonful, like Fit with the Nutella.
14I crave almond butter! The problem is that I do have it in the house because my boyfriend eats it every morning on toast. I just know that once I start eating it I won't stop, so I don't allow myself to have any. I also can't resist Kettle Chips, so those are completely banned.
15Target has this mix of nuts (mostly pecans), dark chocolate chips, and dark chocolate covered esspresso beans. OH MY!
Serving size is 190 calories for 1/4 cup and has 9 servings in it - I will empty that bag in no more than 2 days (while using will power!).
I haven't bought it in a long time because i can't control myself and usually I get it for $4, the other day it was $2.50 and I just walked away.
16As for me, I have a weakness for good cheesecake. It has to be a good one, or I would pass on it. I could eat an ENTIRE, New York-style cheesecake (read: thick and heavy) by myself. Just hand me a fork. Actually, also hand me a good, dark chocolate sauce, and a good bottle of port. I would be in food heaven.
I shudder to think how much fat and calories that comes to -- an entire New York style cheesecake, generous amounts of dark chocolate sauce, and a bottle of dessert red wine?? That's probably enough to send a person into a food coma. LOL
17I have no control when it comes to doritos, ice cream, or this amazing cherry pie from this farm stand near my parents' house. I have been known to eat an entire 8 inch pie by myself in about 24 hours----not good! I try to keep this stuff out of the house just so I won't be tempted. Or I'll do something that is truly evil and by the pie, bring it to the parents' house, eat a slice, and then leave the rest for them to fight over. If I don't bring it home then I don't do the whole shame spiral and eat the whole thing.
18Cashews and ice cream (not together!) are my weaknesses.
19Oh, and frozen grapes. NO willpower whatsoever. I go through about $11 worth of grapes a week! I usually don't feel bad about it though -- grapes are good for you, right?
20Oreo cakesters are my weakness because I can't stop eating them till the box is empty. Now I buy the 100 calorie packs and force myself to stop at 1 pack but if I slip up and have 2 it's only 200 cals tota,l not 450.
21BACON and cheese are my biggest temptations. I refuse to deprive myself, though. Life is too short to live without them!
22Almonds and honey roasted peanuts. I have finished an entire can in one day
23Mexican Food and Ice Cream.
24Pretty much any snack foods are banned from my house. I'll eat a whole meal's worth of snacky foods because cooking takes a long time and I'm usually starving after I come home from work/the gym. Nuts, cookies, ice cream bars... all of these will be gone within 2-3 days. Nutella is AMAZING and I have no control over myself when I buy it, so I don't unless I'm running a really long race that week!
25Salty popcorn popped in oil. Mmmmm.... And I never fill up on it. Popcorn supposedly has a lot of fiber in it... but my body can't tell!
26not much, actually. Chocolate and good artesian bread can get me when I've gone a long time with out eating much. I normally try to remember how large my thighs and pooch are, but it doesn't always work.
27Peanut butter! It's so hard to not eat half the jar, but I've gotten better about it lately. And I started buying the natural kind, so I don't feel nearly as bad when I overindulge.
28Anything sweet!
29I can't stand peanut butter or cheesecake, but love a giant bowl of airpopped popcorn drizzled with about a third of a cup of melted butter. So much fat, but I'm obsessed! And ice cream, which I've learned is replaceable with low fat fro yo, and tastes just as good as long as it's a little melty! Yum!
30Definitely can't keep any type of cookies around or off-brand poptarts. I'm weird and won't eat pop tart brand pop tarts. I can eat an entire box of poptarts in one day. So bad for me, but so good!
31zezee - i have the same problem with that dark chocolate espresso trail mix! as a matter of fact i just had a few pieces after i got home from the gym. i love the praline almonds in them and they are always the first part of the mix to go, but i know they are loaded with sugar
32I'm with you, fit, Nutella is a mega temptation for me. Cream cheese as well, but not to the same extent.
33I'm craving cheesecake now! Thick, fudgy lemon cheesecake. Yum...
And to distract myself from the cheesecake daze and actually answer the question...
It would have to be freshly baked, homemade bread and butter. Fortunately, actually, I'm having to stick to a gluten-free diet at the moment because my IBS is playing merry hell with my insides, but in general, I could (and have, hence one of the reasons why I used to be 30 kg heavier!) eaten almost half a loaf of warm homemade bread and butter in one sitting. Also, New Zealand Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate; it's still hard to stop at a few pieces of good dark chocolate, but definitely not impossible. However, hand me the Dairy Milk and I could go to town. Especially if it's an Easter Egg. For some reason it's so much easier to eat an entire Easter egg than to eat the equivalent amount of chocolate in bar form. I think the hollow inside gives the impression that you're eating mostly air, like souffle or something!
And cereal.
SO glad I rediscovered porridge last year, because I could eat three huge bowls of So Good cereal every morning if I didn't restrain myself. And I DID usually eat two bowls!
My eating habits were terrible!
34Ahh Nutella, how I love thee! Tastes so heavenly, but is clearly the work of the devil. I am with you Fit: spoonfuls right into the system. I try to just have one little spoonful, but always turns into five... No, I can't have it around anymore. Homemade cookies, brownies, and cakes are also weaknesses, and as I love to bake I always send the bulk of such things to the office with my husband!
35Chips mainly. Can't resist Pringles
When I reach 176 pounds I'll allow myself a can,
yummy. Chocolate is something I've grown resistent to thankfully, cause my house is pretty full of it. Never pick up Nutella though, that's just way too temptful.
36Potato chips and fancy cheeses. I just can't have either of them in the house. Especially the chips.
37Ice cream is a biggie...I think my serving sizes are 4 times the 1/2 cup serving size you're supposed to eat. Also, any sort of baked good like brownies or cookies...I try to stay away from them as I have no willpower once I start!
38Peanut M&Ms. Be still my beating heart.
39Icecream. I will eat a half gallon in two days.
40Everything and anything at the same time. If I have some treats regularly, I can control myself easily and I don't overeat. But if I decide to be strict with my diet for a few weeks, then I crave everything and eat a bag full of whatever a buy! Not good...
41Funnily enough - in the German speaking world Nutella was advertised as a health-food for a long time since it contains a lot of calcium. It was marketed as save way to get your kids to get their calcium in. I don't think they do that anymore though.
Yeah, Nutella is a big problem for many women in Europe. Almost all of my friends in Europe cannot have it around without eating the whole jar. I only eat it in hotels at the breakfast buffet. It comes in tiny, little containers and it's a special treat.
My biggest temptation is probably French cheese. And when I am out - soft pretzels. And I when I am out on a hot day, I can't resist a cold beer which leads to me losing all inhibitions concerning food unfortunately.
42i can't stop when i eat chips and salsa
43White cheddar natural cheetos, so good I eat the whole bag in a day
44Those 90-calorie Special K bars. They're supposed to be a low cal snack, but if I have one, I keep craving them and I always end up eating two (or three...). Go figure, my binge food is a "diet" snack. Oh, the irony.
45I love ice cream and crunchy, salty snacks. I'm learning how to eat in moderation but refuse to keep any ice cream in the house and only have single serve salty snacks around.
46AH! I've been obsessed with Nutella since I was a toddler... I love it by the spoonful, or on a hot roll, or for pretzel dip, smeared on a banana, on a sandwich, on a bagel, but most especially -- on ripe strawberries! Absolute bliss.
Now I won't be able to stop thinking about it... eek
47Anything that is sweet. If it's within my sight range, I grab it. So I tend to not buy it what so ever. But if i'm really craving some, I buy small amount to eat for that one time.
48Oh, how food temps us .
I cannot control myself in the presence of a cheese plate.
49oreos and mac n cheese.
50i CAN NOT keep any type of oreo or any velveeta..mac n cheese..anything like that.
