Celeb trainer Jillian Michaels is no stranger to cellulite. And neither is starlet Kim Kardashian. In fact it is estimated that between 80 to 95 percent of women have cellulite somewhere on their body. If you have been worrying about of bit of dimpling on your backside, fear not, because you are not alone. Here are five things I think you should know about cellulite.
- From a purely medical standpoint cellulite doesn't exist; it is nothing more than fat. The word cellulite is French and was first used in medical literature around 150 years ago.
- Cellulite is more prominent in women than in men due to the structural differences of stored fat between the sexes. The connective tissues that create these storage units in men works on diagonals, where as we lucky ladies store our fat in a large vertical honeycomb like structure. This structural form enhances the appearance of the dimples.
- Here's the bad news – there is no way to get rid of cellulite. None of those creams, lotions or rubs will get rid of the dimples caused by cellulite. Topical creams cannot penetrate the three layers of skin to eliminate the fat.
Learn what you can do about cellulite.
- According to the fitness experts at the American Council of Exercise, you can reduce the appearance of cellulite. You need to decrease overall body fat by doing cardio. Dr. Len Kravits, holding a PhD in exercise science, recommends 20 to 60 minutes of cardio, three to five times a week.
- Flaccid muscle can increase the appearance of cellulite, meaning that strength training is highly recommended. You should work the muscles in the areas where the dimpling is occurring two to three times a week. This means doing lunges in all directions and squats for the thighs and glutes. Work your adductors to tone your inner thighs, and your abductors to tone the outer thigh. Just don't skip your strength training.

cool! thanks for the information, Fit! I don't have cellulite right now, but who knows what will happen in the future!
1Great info! Doesn't your diet and genetics have to do with cellulite, too?
2No way to get rid of it for good?
Not even through cardio and strenght training? Bummer
3I have had cellulite since I was 13. I run marathons and strength train with squats and lunges and have around 15% body fat and I still have cellulite. It does look worse when I am not working out as much but it will never completely disapear on me, it is genetic. I hate the misconception that if you have cellulite you are fat or unhealthy because it isnt neccesarily true.
4Yup, agree kclulu. I have it, and it's genetic as well. Even my size 2 - 110 lb mother has it (obvious where I get it!)
5I have also heard that self tanners can reduce the appearance a bit. But if that's my only problem. .I'm okay with it!
I'm the same as kclulu and ella above. I've had it since I was a teen (a very thin one!). I've just accepted it... well that and I tend not to wear shorty shorts.
Self-tanner does help to some degree
6Ugh. I've ALWAYS had cellulite. When I first started high school, I was 5'8 and less than 100 lbs (i.e. freakishly skinny), and even then I had it in my butt!
7yes, my thighs have cellulite and i'm 5'1" and a 105 lbs...it is sooo frustrating, but my thighs tend to be my problem area...i can't get them toned and the cellulite is gross...not to mention how pale i am...i do feel like tanner skin hides it better
8I don't have it, but my entire family does. I used to have some on my thighs and butt when I was overweight, but after starting my running, it all pretty much went away. If I ever gain a bunch of weight it'll probably come back. I think a big part of it is genetics though...I know a lot of thin people that do have it. It's sort of based on how your fat gets deposited under your skin and how your skin covers it. Self-tanner helps make it look smoother though.
9I have pretty much always had it and I wish it would go away! I am a pear shape though so it's all on my hips, thighs and ass. Just where I don't need it.
