Wondering how Marisa Tomei shaped up to play an exotic pole dancer in The Wrestler? According to Us Weekly, her workout was as innocent as a 1950s backyard pastime — she used a weighted Hoopnotica hula hoop ($50). Using an adult-size, slightly weighted hoop makes regular hooping and doing tricks much easier, which you can learn from the Hoopdance or Hoopnotica ($20) DVDs.

The small amount of weight keeps the hoop spinning longer, so it's better for working out. The more time you're actually hooping, the more you can tone your muscles and burn calories. In fact, one hour of hooping can burn up to 600 calories, but it also tones your muscles and improves your posture. Plus it's fun and sexy, so even though your heart is pumping and you're covered in sweat, it hardly feels like a workout.

I love hooping. I did it a lot as a kid, and when I started losing weight in the last eight months, I made a promise that I would get back into it once spring arrived. I have both levels of the Hoopnotica series, and they're fun and easy to follow. Just make sure that you don't buy a kid's hoop. They're way too small for hooping. Plus the tricks on the hoops are fun, too. I know probably four but I'm still learning.
There are many online shops where you can have one custom made if you live in a small town and can't find a hoop. I purchased one from Canyon Hoops two months ago for less than $40 with shipping. And there was a L.A. Times article sometime this year that reviewed weighted hoops if you can find it.
1I can't hula hoop to save my life! I'm quite jealous of these two!
2Marisa Tomei is awesome. I bought a hula hoop (completely randomly) at CVS last week week for $7.99. I don't plan on buying this DVD, but it's fun to use it while watching TV. It's probably not as good of a workout, but it's better than just sitting on the couch.
3I wish I could hula-hoop. I could never do it, even as a kid I couldn't keep one going for more than about 2 seconds. It looks like a fun workout though.
4It looks fun, but I've sadly never been able to hula hoop.
5a friend of mine has one of these weighted hula hoops and it really is an insane workout...sometimes when i'm over there i'll do it for like 5 minutes and i'm winded...granted, she rarely uses it, so she isn't a good example of what it can do for you
6I just ordered a sports 4 pound hula hoop yesterday! Can't wait to get it, i love hula hooping and looking for a new workout
7Never been able to hula hoop. But wanted to say that Marisa Tomei is gorgeous--so I am willing to try whatever she is doing.
8never say never. you can hula-hoop if you put your mind to it.
9marisa tomei is adorable, and i'm definitely envious of her skills!
10I just started hooping and I am addicted
11It definitely works the whole body and especially the abs. The hoops I use are from a company called Hoopnotica - they are weighted and their how to videos are very easy to understand and challenging.
