According to a new report by father - son doctors accidents involving sand holes have caused more deaths than shark attacks.
Between 1990 and 2006, there were 16 deaths in the U.S. involving sand holes or tunnels and only 12 fatalities due to shark attacks. I know this is morbid stuff, but how many of us come face to face with sand holes compared to sharks? Sand holes and tunnels can collapse horrifyingly fast, often leaving no trace of the victim. So play it safe - only let your children play in a hole no deeper than their waist and please fill that hole in before you leave the beach!!! Someone could accidentally trip in the hole while playing paddle ball, football or Frisbee.
For more information and background on the study visit CNN. The article will inspire you to fill in every sand hole you see, and I don't think that is just the mom in me talking.

I read that story yesterday. Pretty scary. A 21-year-old guy died while playing football after he fell backwards into a sand hole and it collpased, suffocating him. Digging people out by hand doesn't work b/c the sand keep filling in the hole. Using backhoes doesn't work, either b/c, even if you know the spot where someone has fallen in, they might get killed by the machinery. Whoa. As if I need something else to be scared of at the beach, in addition to sharks, jellyfish, sand fleas and skin cancer!

2That's sad
3That is really sad and surprising.
But of course sand kills more folks than sharks! Sharks don't eat whole people: they just chomp a bit of arm or leg and maim you for life.
4Many beachs in California will not allow you to dig any size hole. Lifeguards come by and make you close it up right away.
5I must say, I go to the beach every summer and I have loved playing in the sand since I was a baby, but I have never heard of this! I was especially surprised when I read the CNN article that incidents have occurred on Martha's Vineyard, and I go there every year.
6CRAZY STATISTICS!!!
7I never gave this a thought! We love playing in the sand with the kids... I'll remember this advice! Thanks Fit
