I am an unabashed fan of coffee and I split my love evenly between regular ol' joe and espresso drinks. But how do they stack up in terms of caffeine amounts? Or more explicitly, where am I going to get more bang for my buck?

Ounce for ounce, sip for sip, espresso contains more caffeine. Using the ubiquitous Starbucks as our model: one fluid ounce of espresso contains 75 milligrams of caffeine, where a fluid ounce of coffee only contains about 20 mg.
The confusion comes when you begin to compare lattes with coffee. A 16-ounce grande coffee provides 330 mg of rocket fuel caffeine, where a grande latte, containing only two shots (each shot is a fluid ounce) of espresso, provides 150 mg of caffeine. Even though these coffee drinks come in the same sized cup, the caffeine amounts are substantially different. If you order a cup of coffee, instead of a latte, to save time or money, you might end up a little speedier than usual.

The amount of caffeine in coffee actually can vary a lot, depending on the roast and how finely you grind it up. I know my coffee at home has a lot less caffeine in it than Starbucks' does.
1LOL rocketfuel...
2Thanks, that's good to know
3i don't know about everyone else but, i usually either have a cuppacino (espresso + steamed milk + foam ) or an americano (espresso + hot water) or, rarely, just espresso on its own. either way, they all are 1 part espresso - so my caffeine intake doesn't really differ from cup to cup.
4If you go to Caribou Coffee, a 16 oz latte contains 180 mg of caffeine. Just saying.
5Hmm I always thought that coffee had more caffeine in it than espresso. Coffee would keep me awake more than espresso too.
6that's good to know, I usually order latte's thinking they have espresso thus they have a higher caffeine count!
7It always makes me laugh to see all those jokes about being so overwired on espresso when a basic filter coffee has more caffeine. But saying that caffeine amounts are a "bang for your buck"?
Do you actually enjoy coffee, or are you just a user?
8Keep that in your mind, stay away from Robusta, drink only pure Arabica coffee, Robusta contains much more caffeine than Arabica, in espresso they use a blend of both, that's why its taste awfuly bitter.
9i'm no user(haha, thanks swag)
10i definitely cannot drink espresso plain no matter how much of a boost i need. but i guess whatever floats your boat, goes.
