Hitting the pool is a great way to beat the heat and burn calories. I'd much rather do laps in the pool than laps around a track when the temperature is high. If you're looking to get more out of your swimming workout, think about slipping on a pair of fins.
Kicking with fins adds resistance targeting your butt, thighs, and hips. You have to kick harder, so you'll tone up faster than with no fins at all. Wear rubber swim fins ($28) like these when swimming laps, or just hold on to the side of the pool and practice kicking. You'll be able to feel the difference right away. Not only will you tone your legs and booty, but you'll also become a stronger swimmer.

Make sure you get the shorter 'zoomer' fins and not the longer SCUBA like fins.
1I fitness swam for over 20 years. In my opinion, there is a caveat to using fins, hand paddles, weights, etc. It does put extra weight (read strain) on one's joints, like the ankles, knees, lower back, shoulders, wrists, etc.
Once one injures (or strains) a joint, it may become a chronic problem. Swimming with these extra accessories may not be worth it, in my opinion.
One of the benefits of swimming is the low-impact it has on joints. If one uses these accessories, it negates that benefit.
2I hardly use fins for swimming - [probably I never get the right kind - I have the SCUBA diving like fins and my swim is easier if I have the fins on]
I do use a lot of swimming paddles and pull-buoy. I highly recommend this pair http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/1231.htm. It really help on my stroke.
3I have the longer scuba like fins. Got them years ago, and have yet to even use them in the pool. Maybe I'll trim them and get back to the pool with them
4I would look like a total reject wearing these in the gym pool so... no. =)
