His designing daughter Stella is strict vegetarian, and now Sir Paul McCartney is hoping we will all be vegetarian one day a week as well.

The former Beatle hosted a luncheon to kick off Britain's Meat Free Monday campaign. There are obvious health benefits to reducing your meat intake, but Paul became involved because of the environmental impact of limiting meat consumption as well. He said:
A couple of years ago the United Nations came out with a report that said for people to eat less meat would have a big impact on the environment. It's all got a bit out of hand and I think people want to do their bit to bring it back into line, and this is an answer we've got involved in."
See which Hollywood types attended the event to support the notion of not eating meat on the first day of the week when you read more.
Kate Bosworth and Kelly Osbourne were there, as well as Yoko Ono and Moby.
Not sure what to make for dinner tonight. Try my Mediterranean Salad With Chickpea Patties or Curried Quinoa Salad. You might also want to try Sesame Maple Roasted Tofu as well. To learn more about a similar program here in the states, check out Meatless Monday.
Radley
that's ridiculous. people ate meat all the way through the centuries. in europe at least.
1did people eat as much as we eat now? were there as many people relying on this protein source for their diets? in case you didn't notice there are a lot more folks these days. eating meat is not the same as it was for the past centuries. we have created intense industrialized ways to produce large quantities of meat in short periods of time. it is not the same thing.
2Allyta - Right, but animals weren't being raised in such a large-scale manner. Also, people ate far less meat, since people with little money couldn't afford it. Here's a short explanation:
3According to a 2006 United Nations initiative, the livestock industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation worldwide, and modern practices of raising animals for food contributes on a "massive scale" to deforestation[2], air and water pollution, land degradation, loss of topsoil, climate change[3], the overuse of resources including oil and water, and loss of biodiversity. The initiative concluded that "the livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global."[4]
Meat is considered a luxury food in most parts of the world; it's only the developed countries that view it as some sort of right that we have. Meat's expensive and it costs a lot in resources/money to provide it, so it's not a bad idea to skip it every so often. It's not like you're going to starve to death without meat for one day, plus you'll save money at the same time.
4MEAT YUMMM!!!! I LOVE MEAT! GIVE ME MOREEEE!!!! Juicy Juicy Steak yum yum yum will never not eat!
5yay for paul
i think people dont want to listen to the huge impact eating meat has
on the environment cause they just like the taste of meat, which is just plain lazy in my opinion.
6allowing people to post anonymously causes things like that above.
love that paul is advocating vegetarianism, eating less meat is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and improve your health.
7This is great. And really, it's my goal as a vegetarian--just to get people to see how great vegetarian food is and how you can have a few meals without it. You don't have to give it up completely if you don't want to, but if everyone cut down, the impact would be huge.
ps. I love Stella's stuff.
8I am working on it Sir Paul! No more red meat for me!
9I am a vegetarian. However, do I think you should push your beliefs on other people?? NO. To each his own, man. Don't condemn other people just because they dont do what YOU do.
10I never did like Paul McCarty. Find him arrogant and assh0le-ish.
This is a good idea that deserves endorsement. It's good for the environment and it's good for your health to cut back on meat. I don't see much "pushing" or condemnation in his statement. It's the same as encouraging people to recycle.
11Hah as of last Tuesday, I'm a vegetarian anyway.
