While eating calcium is better for your bones, it can be quite a challenge to eat the recommended 1,000 mg daily. That's where calcium supplements can lend a healthy hand. Both calcium carbonate, found in Tums, and calcium citrate in Citracal work well as supplements. However, calcium carbonate is best absorbed with food and generally has more calcium per tablet, which means it is more cost effective since you can take fewer pills. If you're the forgetful type though, calcium citrate might work better for you. Your body absorbs it well with or without food, so you can take it anytime during your day and reap all the benefits of the supplement.
Do you take a calcium supplement? If so, do you know which version of the mineral you take?

I am in DIRE need of a calcium supplement... I despise milk (but if i use it in a recipe its always Vitamin D... or in my chocolate milk!)... and I'm just not a big 'dairy' person (except icecream!) So, I'm in trouble...
1I have both supplements right now. I take Tums for my heartburn, and I have the other, for taking as an actual supplement. I love milk and all things dairy, but for the first part of this pregnancy anything with dairy in it would make me very sick, so I had to stock up. I also like Viactiv calcium chews those are much easier to swallow, and used those all through high school and after.
2Leafy greens are a great source of calcium as well. Dairy is not always the way to go. Plus Vit. D is important for absorption.
3I take a calcium citrate supplement everyday along with a multi-vitamin. Since I was little I have despised milk and I think by the time I was 7 or so my parents stopped forcing me to drink it! Funny enough, I'm vegan so I don't' eat any dairy!
4I eat plenty of dairy products and I take supplements. There's osteoporosis in my family, so I'm trying to offset that. Also, I think maintaining good bone health is good for teeth, too. Per my dental check-ups, my teeth are healthy and have THICK enamel. I haven't had a cavity (since my first one) for over 20 years.
5I take Caltrate which is calcium carbonate
6I take Tums and a calcium citrate supplement at different times of the day so I get more absorption. I have to make sure I really get enough because both my grandmas have osteoporosis and I'm considered high risk for it as well.
7I just wanted to add, calcium citrate is absorbed better with less acid in the stomach, so it is a good type of calcium for those who take acid reducer/blocker meds. Otherwise, calcium carbonate is good, but not in a tums format because they neutralize acid, and calcium carbonate needs acid to absorb. Also, make sure you get a calcium supplement with magnesium and vitamin D as well for the best absorption. And remember that your body can only absorb 500 mg of calcium at a time so if you're taking more than that, divide your doses. And to hottpink, if your multivitamin contains iron, take your multi and calcium supplements at different times. Iron inhibits the absorption of calcium. (and obviously don't eat iron rich foods with your calcium supplement!)
I take calcium citrate with magnesium and vitamin D everyday. I take
acid reducer meds so I use the citrate form instead. I am also allergic to dairy so I try to get my calcium from food sources like fortified soy milk and orange juice, tofu, almonds and leafy
greens. Osteoporosis runs heavily in my family too, and due to taking a steroid inhaler for asthma, my risk in even higher! Thank God for calcium supplements!
8I take 2 Calci Chew tablets each day, that's 1000 mg. They have calcium carbonate minerals in them. I got them as a prescription drug from my doctor because I'm lactose intolerant and there's no way I get enough calcium in my diet with just food.
9For me,I am always drinking milk every morning but aside from that I make sure that I always eat bread with cheese. It is also one source of calcium.Milk fish would be the best also. However you may want to try maxgxl australia, A lot of people are now using it everyday and they all satisfied with the results.
10carbonate. i take one after my breakfast, though the package recommends two a day, but i don't want to rely entirely on the pills - i try to eat the rest with my food.
