Trail running in the woods is one of my favorite ways to work out for so many reasons. It's peaceful, all those hills are great for my quads and booty, the shade is cooler and protects me from UV rays, and the soft dirt is easy on my joints. If you love trail running, too, here are some things to think about:
- Harder to spot than curbs, tree roots and rocks are a natural part of the trail. Keep your eyes peeled and focused forward, constantly scanning the trail for obstacles.
- Wearing bug spray is a great idea since mosquitoes and other creepy crawlies love to buzz around in damp places.
- Avoid mud and puddles. Not only is it slippery and dirty, but if your feet get wet, you're more likely to develop blisters.
What else should you keep in mind when hitting the trail? To find out keep reading.
- Shower immediately after your run in case you came into contact with poison ivy or poison oak. Scrubbing your legs with soap and water will help get rid of the oils that cause the rash.
- Check yourself for ticks after a run, too. You can use a mirror or ask a friend to check the parts you have a hard time seeing. Don't forget your head — ticks like to hide.

I'd also add that I usually keep my iPod on low since I feel like trails can be more dangerous than running in other, more populated areas.
1I agree with tlsgirl, except I don't even neccesarily feel safe trail running alone period. It is frustrating because none of my friends are into fitness so I have no one to go trail running or even really hiking with and I am uneasy going by myself. Maybe I just watch too many real crime tv shows.
2I would just leave the ipod at home for the trails. We have critters where I live (bear, mountain lion, etc). I need to be cautious of running in my neighborhood because of spooking deer that sometimes hide by tall bushes. Spooking ones with antlers is my big concern.
3I'm an urban runner, but one of my friends is really into trail running so I think I'll join him... (and never again will I do two 20 mile long runs IN THE CITY... on the CEMENT!)
4Great point about not listening to music while in the woods, so you can stay aware.
5I don't take my music with me when I run on my own... that's just crazy !! Even if I was running on the streets I would leave my iPod at home.
I run along a cycle path and I'm in the UK so I'm not too concerned about ticks or anything! Mosquitos however...
