Eating many colors of the rainbow is easy, but dark purple can be hard to come by. And that is just one reason you should learn to love Black Mission Figs.

While dried figs are available all year round, fresh figs are in season June through September, which means you should start seeing them in the grocery store soon and they should be affordable. Four ounces of fresh figs provides about four grams of fiber. Figs are also a good source for potassium. Most importantly they are a sweet low-calorie food — four ounces is only 84 calories. They make a juicy dessert on a hot night. You can add figs to salads; they pair wonderfully with arugula. I like to eat them as an appetizer. After washing the figs, I cut off the top stem and slice the fruit in half. I spread the fig halves with a layer of mild, soft goat cheese that I mixed with freshly ground pepper. I sprinkle the plate with freshly chopped chives. This quick finger food is surprisingly tidy and is great to eat while preparing dinner.

As you can see I was a little heavy handed with the cheese for this round, but obviously the more thinly spread the cheese is the fewer calories. Tell me, do you like figs? If so, how do you eat them?

Urban Flats has a wonderful Fig, Prosciutto and Blue Cheese flatbread pizza. I had it for the first time this past weekend and fell in love with it!

2Figs and brie for me!
3I like just plain figs, yum!! I've been looking for them at the farmer's market, glad it is finally fig season.
4I can't stress how much I LOVE figs. I can eat them all day everyday. I love the seed crunch, the softness, the color! They are sooo yummy. I love them so much I planted a fig tree in my parents backyard. I have no idea when it will produce but in the meantime I'm keeping my eyes out for the figs in the market
5i LOVE LOVE LOVE figs.

7figs and virgen olive oil ,, is the cure for Sterility
8I can't eat figs since I learnt about the fig wasp life cycle.
9just plain 'ol figs. but great with all kinds of cheeses, including cottage cheese at brekkie.
10i love just plain figs but figs with feta, a drizzle of really good balsamic and a sprinkle of freshly chopped nuts (i like pecans) is divine
11They're a great, albeit unconventional, fruit to slice into cereal (especially an unsweet, crunchy, slightly nutty one like Ezekiel 4:9's sprouted flax). Because the pairing is so gastronomically symbiotic, I'll usually crumble some walnuts in for good measure.
It might be an exclusively personal taste or just the seasonality, but it never seems to hurt when strawberries are also added to the bowl.
Stewed/poached/roasted figs taste great on their own or mixed in to a bit of greek (or plain) yoghourt. Their sweetness concentrates with the heat, but a little drizzle of honey before they go in the oven (or honey in lieu of sugar in your poaching syrup, to which you could also add a vanilla pod or cinnamon stick, though where good figs are concerned, best to leave unadulterated) is not unwelcome.
