Explaining how you injured yourself can be demoralizing, and if you hurt yourself in bed, it can embarrassing, especially if you were just sleeping.
Waking up with a crick in your neck means waking up on the wrong side of the bed, and one way to avoid this "sleeping injury" is to avoid sleeping on your belly. Tucking yourself into bed on your tummy might feel safe and sweet, but since you have to turn your head just to breathe, you're disrupting the alignment of your neck. This position not only leads to a stiff neck, but it can be rough on your lower back too. Breathing deeply is essential to quality sleep, and when you sleep on your belly, you compress your lungs.
If you do wake up with a crick in your neck, check some simple remedies in my post What a Pain in the Neck.

Yeah, sleeping on my belly brings on the aches, especially when I rest my head on my arm. It's a hard habit to break.
1i can't fall asleep unless i'm on my stomach but I've never had neck or back problems so I guess I dont see the harm. I'm a good sleeper!
2I've always slept on my stomach, and I rarely get neck problems. Most of my neck issues tend to come from staring at the computer all day.
That being said, I CANNOT sleep on my back or my side. If I try to sleep in my side, my arm falls asleep. On my back, it's just too uncomfortable. So, I guess the stomach it is.
3I, too, can't fall asleep unless I'm on my stomach, and I also have never had back or neck problems (yet, at least). When I was a baby my mom would lie down on her back with me on her chest until I fell asleep. Her mom did this with her, too, and that's why our entire family sleeps this way
We think . . .
4I fall asleep on my stomach but always roll over at some point. Also, there are waaaaaay more embarassing things than a sleep injury. That's nothing and I wouldn't be sheepish about it.
I've had plenty of friends-- and my husband-- deal with sex-related injuries. Now THAT is awkward to explain to curious people.
5I kinda sleep on my belly, but I always twist the upper half of my body so that it's on the side. Never had a neck problem after bed, provided I don't pile on the pillows too much.
6Yeah, my chiropractor said this is one of the worst positions to sleep in as it also really messes with the proper alignment of your vertebrae after a awhile. So even though you may not feel the consequences on, you will.
I work hard not to sleep on my belly, even though its my fav and most comfy position.
7I like sleeping like this...didn't know it was bad for you.
8I sleep like this, but have had major neck/back problems recently. It's so hard to change sleeping style at this point! Another negative to sleeping on your stomach is the advancement of wrinkles
