Sometimes, going for a run is just an excuse to listen to my favorite playlists on my iPod. The beat of the music keeps pushing me along and the lyrics entertain me. Other times, I like to run without music and listen to the birds chirping, my stride and my breath. I feel more aware of my surroundings too.
So I want to know...

Celestina
Great Plains
Givenchy
I don't do a lot of jogging..but if I decide to do so, I absolutely needs my mp3 player!
I will not go running unless I have my Ipod
I have my ipod when I'm solo, but if I'm dragging someone along it's likely I don't have it with me. Also, if it's a spur of the moment run, and I don't have my armband, etc. then nope, it's just me and the trees.
Yes, there are certain songs that make me run a little bit faster and pump me up.
I rarely run outside (I have pretty bad knees), so I stick with the elliptical at the gym. But, I always have my iPod shuffle with me when I'm on the elliptical... I think I HAVE to. If I don't have it, I don't feel as motivated by the upbeat music. And for some reason... the YMCA that I work out does not have music playing in the cardio room. Strange...
I think music is annoying when I'm running outside. If I'm in the gym or at home on my elliptical, then I can use the distraction from the person in front of me or the wall. If I'm outside, I like to observe everything as it jiggles by and my Fergie playlist just wouldn't go.
I don't listen if I'm riding my bike or if I'm working out with someone else like my BF. I only listen to my iPod when I'm working out solo (which is really rare). But I'm a fitness instructor, so each class I teach is to a playlist of music that I like, so it's kinda similar.
It depends for me. I need my Shuffle at the gym - it's motivating. I kayak a lot too, though, and I love to listen to the sounds of nature on the water. I still take my Ipod though because sometimes I like to kayak UPSTREAM.. and I definitely need motivation for that.
I run on the weekends when I have the time and I need to be aware of my surroundings, so no Ipod.
When I go for a walk, yes and when I'm rollerblading, no.
i have to hear my favourite music while running because it helps me a lot and to hear my own gasping makes me feel more exhausted than i actually am
I love my ipod when I"m running. I've always had to listen to music whether I'm outside or in the gym. If I'm with a friend then I'll talk w/ her on the eliptical, bike, or walking. but running is a must with the music.
I run with one earphone in and one out. I don't want someone to run up behind me and me not be able to hear them.
I always take mine when I'm outside I need the music to keep me going. Sometimes its even makes the workout a little longer cause one more song that I like comes on.SoI have to keep going til the song is finished
yesss, unless i am walking with someone, then we are talking instead.
I love to listen to music when I go running! It helps me stay motivated to keep going!
I always take my ipod when running.. unless my fiance runs with me.
An Ipod makes the longer runs go so much quicker!!
I only listen to one earbud, so I have some sense of the sounds around me for safety but can still jam
I like to do one earbud too nikki. It doesn't matter which ear, but I try to alternate and keep a balance so I don't lose my hearing altogether
It depends on where I am. I always listen to my ipod when running, unless I'm in a deserted park trail or somewhere that makes me feel unsafe.
I have trouble motivating myself to run without music, but sometimes if my iPod battery dies, I'm surprised how much I enjoy the street and nature noise.
I listen to music even when I dont workout! Life should have a soundtrack . . . .
no, my ipod broke
I do both depending on my mood and the time of day. I like to keep my ears clear if I am running at dusk since I want to keep my wits about me.
Music gives me a rhythm to work out to.
Yes. I need it to keep me pumped up! But I don't have it too loud so that I am still able to hear what is going around me.
I listen to music whenever I go out alone, whether I'm running, biking, Nordic walking, roller blading, walking my dog, going to work, grocery shopping, on my way to meet my friends, all the time.
I'm still very much a beginning runner, so I use my music as a timer. I might walk for one song, run for two, walk for one, and do intervals for one (run for the first verse, walk for the chorus, run during the second verse and the bridge, etc.). I know I should just wear a watch like normal people, but I hate wearing watches.
I don't run (horrible knees) but when I walk my dogs, or do the elliptical at the gym or mow my grass, music is a must. I love that it makes me walk faster or work out harder and stay motivated.
i love listening to music when i'm running outdoors.. i swear the music is like this invisible hand that pushes me from behind that helps every step i take.
It so terrible and dangerous to run with an Ipod on. You can't hear someone coming or cars. I live in a big city and I think people wearing ipods are sitting (running) ducks for someone to grab them and mug them. I never use it. It's also illegal in a race to wear an ipod, so if you are training for something and feel as if you can't run without it, you will have a hard time on race day!
That said, if I have to run on the treadmill or use the elliptical at the gym, I won't touch either one without my Ipod.
It depends on my mood.
ALWAYS!!!!!
My iPod IS my running partner.
Always always always. I work out alone because that is my "me" time and I find music makes it so much easier. The only times I wouldn't have it would be if I forgot (gasp!) or the battery died.
And Erin, iPods aren't illegal in races... or I think it would be very rare. I have run two marathons and a handful of other races and always worn my iPod. So do most other people, it seems!
My iPod is older and heavier. I really enjoy the sounds of nature (assuming I'm in an area that provides it).
When I'm in familiar territory, I'm all about the iPod. However, if I'm near heavy traffic or on a trail, I prefer to listen to my surroundings.
erin214, i completely agree. running outside with headphones on is too dangerous, it's not worth the risk. but i don't usually run, i'm a rower. so when i'm on the lake, i love listening to the boat move through the water. rowing is a fantastic sport--you ladies should check it out. don't assume you'll get man arms--it's actually using your legs, and a great cardio in addition! the lake i row at has a dozen of herons and some resident bald eagles--how can you beat that? certainly not on a track or running in the city.
No iPod. No working out. iPod is a must.
I alternate. Sometimes I need to just gather my thoughts because I'm frustrated, and I'll run without my iPod then, but most of the time, I really need the music to get my going, esp. if I know my run is going to be monotonous. But I always take out one or both earbuds when I'm about to cross the street, etc.
I think it's fine either way. I ran without music for a long time, even after iPods came out. I now use the music to get me out there if I'm having a hard time convincing myself, or I leave it at home when I want to think. Running with music can be a great distraction, but running without it can give you some time to yourself without any interruptions.
I also don't think it's that dangerous to run with music. I've lived in huge cities and I feel like you are ultra aware of your surroundings when you are running, with or without the iPod. I guess it's just different for everyone.
Yes - I always listen to music when I workout outside. It's a MUST!
yep gotta have the music to push me beyond
I've tried running outside with my music on but I can hardly hear it without putting the music on high volume. By then, I'm too scared to harm my ears so I don't listen to music while exercising outside anymore.
running outside. no. i dont listen to my ipod.i need to be aware of my surrounding. i get paranoid/scared if there are people running/walking overtaking me. and also i love the sound of nature.haha. but exercising in the gym (treadmill etc)yes, i need to have my ipod.
my ipod is pretty much glued to me at all times. Most of the time it's the only reason I do any exercising. I get so bored without it.

I don't really run much outside I usually just stick to the treadmill at the gym but either way I always need my ipod, I can not run without my ipod.
