For healthy, normal-sized woman, skinny jeans are not a welcomed fashion statement. Aside from paining a woman's self-esteem and making many feel the need to lose weight, new research shows that skinny jeans also cause physical pain.
Constant pressure from the tight denim jeans cuts off the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve create the nerve condition meralgia paresthetica, known in layman's term a bit more descriptively as "tingling thigh syndrome." The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve runs from the outside of the pelvis and through the thigh. When compressed, it causes a numb, tingling, or burning sensation along the upper leg.
Tingling thigh syndrome is more common in construction workers who wear heavy work belts, pregnant women, or those who are obese. Over the past few years though, more and more healthy women are complaining of symptoms due to their tight skinny jeans. High heels, often worn with these jeans, compound the issue since they tilt the pelvis forward, increasing pressure on the nerve. Fortunately, there's little risk for causing permanent damage, but the sensations may inspire women to switch to looser-fitting pants. Tell me, have you ever experienced numb or tingling thighs from your jeans?

Um...nope. This is a new one to me...
1No.
And, I don't know what this backlash against skinny jeans is all about. I am a size 8 or 10 and I have a pair that I wear from time to time. I usually get complimented on how good they look on me.
2Nope. I'm also usually an 8 or 10 (a definitive 10 now, sadly) and often wear skinny jeans which most people say make me look thinner.
3No.
I have to agree with lilkimbo about the skinny jeans statement. I feel l'm normal sized as well. I'm short 5'3", and a size 2 or 4...depending on the day, I don't think I'm super skinny by any stretch of the imagination, and I love skinny jeans. I know people of larger sizes (some shorter, some taller), that also seem "normal sized" to me, and rock skinny jeans as well...
Also, I've never heard anyone say they get tingling thighs from them.
4no.. I have chicken legs. I was so glad when this trend resurfaced!... now I can wear jeans that actually fit my legs and flatter them.
5I agree with the other comments. I have a pair of tingle-free skinny jeans for my healthy body that I love. Maybe this style isn't for everyone, but when isn't that true?
6No ... then again, skinny jeans have always fit me loosely because i have really thing legs.
7First of all, what qualifies as "healthy and normal-sized"? I've always been thin to average, and I hate it when people use "healthy" as a synonym for "larger," assuming that thin people can't be healthy. I would say anyone who is "normal sized" could look good in skinny jeans, provided that you buy a size that fits you. If you're legs are tingling, it's time for a reality check, because you're probably squeezing yourself into something way too small.
8I have two pairs, and I've never had a problem with either of them.
9I don't mind skinny jeans either. I wouldn't call myself superskinny, but I think skinny jeans look alright on me, too. I've heard that they can cause numb thighs, but I don't think I've ever owned a pair that was so tight that it caused that.
10buy pants that fit you, people. seriously who gets poor circulation from jeans? these aren't corsets, sheesh!
11I'm a big believer in wearing what you want and what you think looks good. But come'on if it's cutting off circulation it's time to rethink your outfit, lol.
12I am one of those people who look horrible in skinny jeans (thick thighs AND calves) even though I'm size 6-8, so I can't judge from my own experience. But on most people they don't actually tight enough to interfere with circulation.
13Okay, I'll admit, I totally squeeze into smaller sizes when its the last one in the store, but jeans stretch out over time. Never had a tingling sensation in my thighs that wasn't related to exercise.
And I totally agree with anonymous. Just because I'm thin doesn't mean that I'm unhealthy and abnormal! I'm just built this way. And skinny jeans look good on a lot of women, regardless of size. I've only seen a few occasions in which skinny jeans looked odd and that was due to their body shape, not size.
14I always use skinny jeans and never felt that pain
15i have big hips, which is always a pain in the butt! but most the time i get complimented on my skinny jeans, but everytime i look in the mirror when i'm wearing them i about die, cuz i thonk they kinda emphasize my hips....
16stupid hips..grrr haha
I am one of those ladies with meaty, muscley thighs and I am not a fan of the skinny jeans so this is not an issue or me. bring back the 501s!
17Yes, I've had terrible luck with skinny jeans, and I have fairly skinny legs. When I rode a bicycle on a constant basis a few years ago, my leg became so constricted that it would tingle all the time and actually began to cause my muscles not to relax. My left leg swelled to twice it's size, I was rushed to the hospital because they thought I had a blood clot. My doctor never figured out what it was, and so far all I've been able to do is self diagnose since reports started coming out about this issue.
18I suppose I am what they mean by the 'healthy' euphemism
I'm a European size 38 or
40 so I think that's a size 8 or 10 (mostly ten) and I'm not of a supermodel height either, 172 cm. But I love skinny jeans and I definitely look skinnier in them than in other types of
jeans. It's true that they emphasize your hips and behind, but if you're blessed with good-looking calves it can really be flattering for your legs. So I think this post overreacts a little
bit: a lot of my friends who don't look like supermodels either rock the skinny jeans, and none of them have ever experienced 'tingly thighs'. Also, I can imagine wearing heels all the time
is not that good for you, but when you wear them from time to time, they definitely help you to be aware of your posture and the way you hold yourself (aka shoulders straight etc).
19"healthy"??? What does that mean? We are the most ridiculously obese nation and I feel like instead of dealing with that as a problem, we are just accepting it out of laziness and labeling it "healthy" and "normal-sized". I am by no means advocating starving yourself to emulate the unrealistic images that the beauty industries are constantly trying to force on us. But a normal, healthy body is one that is well fed with foods that our bodies are meant to digest (fruits, veg, grains, etc. and NOT cheetos or similar) as well as being active.
20slow news day?
these articles come out every couple of years. i remember one about how low-rise jeans were causing pinched nerves in the hip area.
how do you spell BORING?!
21I bought a new pair of skinny jeans recently, and I am starting to think that they are a size too small. If I wear them for a little too long, my legs start feeling funny, so maybe it's this. But they look so good on me!!
22If only jeans manufacturers wouldn't assume that we're all supermodel height, then it wouldn't be necessary to wear high heels with the jeans.
23Of course, you could just look for someone who can sew and have them shorten the jeans
24Fashion, that would work for skinny or straight leg jeans to some extent, but it doesn't work for flares or bootcut because you lose the entire shape of the leg!
25I didn't consider those other types, I was just thinking about the skinny ones so you might be right about flares and bootcut. However, I think it all depends on how much you need to take of. I remember that as a teen my mom always had to take a little bit of, but that was just like a 4 cm piece (I guess that's about an inch or a little bit more??) and that worked quite well. But of course, when you have to take off a lot it would definitely alter the shape too drastically. Damn, if we could just lengthen our legs, huh?
26That would be great!
27I haven't experienced tingling thighs, but my legs really do feel restricted when I wear one of my sister's pairs of skinny jeans. They're just really tight on my calves, so I don't wear them often, not just because of the discomfort, but because I do feel it's not good for my circulation.
I actually appreciate this post. Thanks, Fit!
28I'm a size 00 and I adore(and wear frequently) skinny jeans and I have recently noticed my feet tingling and turning purple! My jeans don't FEEL or look too tight, but could skinny jeans be the cause of my bizarre feet conditions?
29I resent the implication that I'm not a healthy, normal-sized woman if I wear and like skinny jeans. The study is interesting, but your presentation of it is just offensive.
30I've never had this happen...
31This topic is not at all "BORING" to me, as I have a lump in the middle left thigh with swelling all the way up to my hip. I've had horrible shooting pain (especially when I wear jeans that are snug on my thigh), some numbness in parts of my leg and foot and an overall feeling of discomfort on my lower left side. My doctors can't explain it...yet. I'm seeing someone tomorrow and asking to have an MRI done for the left leg. I've worn skinny low rise jeans for years and if my trauma is the product of my jeans, I will be happy it isn't something worse, like a malignant tumor. I will also dump all my "tight" jeans and go for dresses and skirts. Not worth it!!! And I'm a size 2/4 and I love fashion, but this pain is too high of a price to pay!
32Anonymous--- I'm curious as to how your MRI went? Sounds like we've had some similar issues, I'd like to know if you ever receive a medical 'conclusion'.... hmmmm!!!!
33It happens to me all the time, but I wear them anyways because they look good on me. I'm a size 4 and I'm really tiny. My legs are thick, though. It's just what happens when you don't have skinny legs like normal girls.
34I'm a size 3 and, honestly, I think it's because of my hips.
35I have never felt pain in my thighs.
And why do people always try to find something
in a post just so they can take it the wrong way and criticize?
actually the average woman is a size 12 to 14. however, im a size 10 and i love wearing skinny jeans. they look on women of any size cause they show off your curves. i have never felt any tingling in my legs though. it helps if the jeans are a stretchy material like the ones from old navy :]
36i've never felt any tingling in my thighs at all either, and i love skinny jeans. i wear them pretty often too. but i won't change my style unless it life-threatening.
37This has happened to me, and for awhile I have been very scared. But, I think that I finally found the problem. I'm only 5'1 and I wear a size 6, that fit around my thighs snugly - the tingling starts to happen in my lower calves, and crawls up to my thighs...it's a terrible feeling! I have to sit down somewhere until the tingling subsides, then I can continue walking.
38Um Sometimes I Feel Mild Pain and Itching In My Thighs I'm A Small Size 00 And I Enjoy The Size SOMETIMES Hey I'm Only 13!!!!!!!!!
