If you're trying to make your barbecue a little healthier by grilling up salmon burgers instead of ones made out of beef, don't skimp on the buns. It is easy to be fooled by ones that look healthy, but still have enriched flour listed as the first ingredient. As you'll recall, enriched flour is made when good old healthy wheat flour is processed and stripped of all the nutrients, and then companies add a little back in. The word "enriched" sounds healthy, but this is not what you want to be eating.

Go on a bun mission to find ones made with whole wheat flour. But don't stop there — make sure your buns are free of corn syrup as well. If you're in a bun conundrum and can't find any made with healthy ingredients, pick up some regular bread and use slices of that as your bun.

"pick up some regular bread and use slices of that as your bun" seriously? a few bad for you buns aren't going to kill you
1@imLissy - you literally took the words right out of my mouth. I clicked over here from my feed to say that exact thing.
Settle down, FitSugar. Jeez.
2I tend to agree with Fit on this one. For someone who is very strict with their diet, it is incredibly hard to find sandwich buns w/o corn syrup or enriched flour. I buy ciabatta rolls at the local bakery in place of hamburger/boca burger buns, and they're so good.
3ezekiel makes buns. they are pricey if you are doing a big cookout, but just for a few people I think they are worth it.
4Or make your own! It's not that hard, especially if you have a bread machine and a little time (I bulk bake/cook on weekends or evening when I can.) I love my homemade buns and the recipe can be used for hotdogs, brats, hoagies, etc. (not that these are healthy of course
)
You know exactly what goes into your food when you make it. I am blessed to have the time to do this. I know it's not for everyone, just a suggestion.
5or, you could just skip the bun and eat more of something else too...
6White bread won't kill you, but still, I'd rather get my sugar intake from something more indulgent. At least whole grains are more....well, wholesome. I think they taste better too.
7The buns in the picture are mostly refined flour (organic wheat flour? still refined.) Personally, I don't think the difference between sugar and corn syrup is very relevant in such a small concentration, either. A normal bun occasionally won't hurt anyone.
8Why in the world does bread have sugar in it.... the only bread anyone should be eating is Ezekiel Bread... and I wouldn't even call it "bread"... it's more like sprouted whole grains.
