The Memorial Day weekend means pools across the country will be opening for the Summer. In light of the start of swim season, a bit of news caught my eye — in a recent survey, one in five Americans admitted to peeing in the pool. Wow! A while back a Kelly Clarkson quote prompted me to ask you all about peeing in the shower. Now I am curious about this issue, because I am incredulous about these statistics.

Ewwww, 26% pee in the pool? That's disgusting.
I can't believe how many people still pee in the pool!
and THAT is why i hate pools
wish i didn't know
No. I can't believe people actually do either! I mean I always knew kids probably do, but older people... ehhh. Well I think it's safe to say my longing to go to a water park soon has been cured!
funny story, when I was a little kid there was always this "fact" among my friends that if you peed in a public pool, the chemicals in the pool would turn your urine to orange so people would know you peed in the pool.
I know it seems gross, but honestly, urine is sterile, and with all the hundreds of gallons of water in that pool, probably so diluted within two minutes of the act it couldn't hurt anything (even if it was possible it could hurt something) in the first place. However, I would never encourage using a pool as a public toilet. That would probably lead to much worse than peeing in it, which would be very, very unpleasant.
Besides, people swim (and probably pee) in ocean and lake water all the time with no ill effects, and that has way more bacteria and sketchy organic matter in it than a pool. So I don't really see what the enormous fuss is about.
yeah, i would rather swim in a pool that people pee in than swim in a lake with nasty crap from fishes. At least a pool has chlorine to keep me from getting sick
I agree with bakkachan! I've peed in the pool, I have no problems with it.
I think peeing in a pool is gross. I don't know about anyone else but I've accidentally swallowed pool water before.
Sure, urine may be sterile [if you're totally healthy!] - but it's STILL gross. Nobody wants to accidentally ingest your diluted pee. Period. There's a reason toilets were invented - use 'em! And besides, there's other contaminants that can get in pool water you can catch that chlorine won't kill.
That's not even an adult question. A better way to have put it would have been "Do you teach your child NOT to pee in the pool?" The best time to go swimming at a public pool or apartment pool would be first thing in the morning before all the kids get in! I suppose the next question will be "Do you pee in the bathtub?"
No, no and no. sooooo wrong.
Oh No! Not more "pee questions"! Everyone should just stick to using the toilet, period!
Ew! Sorry, but that's too gross for words.
Gross! I've never peed in the pool, even when I was a kid. I remember my cousins making fun of me when I'd get out of the pool to go to the bathroom...they were always like, "You can just pee in the pool, no one's going to care!" I know theoretically it's probably not a huge deal, but the idea of swimming around in water that people have peed in just grosses me out.
"I know it seems gross, but honestly, urine is sterile,"
In your body, as long as you don't have an infections, then it is. Outside? Not so much. And people can get sick from being in the ocean or lake.
I just physically could not do that! It really grosses me out.
I agree with Anon, urine is only sterile the second it's outside your body. After that, bacteria breed so rapidly in it that it quickly becomes extremely un-sterile. I dunno what the chemical reactions are in a chlorine-filled pool though, maybe it stays "sterile" or slows down the bacteria orgy?
Anyway, as a kid, I refused to pee in any body of water -- I even made my entire family drive back to the shore so I didn't pee in the lake!
This is very disgusting!
How hard is it to go to the toilet to pee!
It's disgusting there are adults who think it's okay to pee in the pool while others are in it. So gross and disrespectful of others. Not everyone is okay with your urine (diluted, chlorinated or not).
Ugh, disgusting and I cannot believe 30% voted "yes". :confusion: The only time this situation happened to me was when I was 4yrs old and had weak control. Even then, I was grossed out by it. To think adults engage in doing so is quite vomit-inducing.
DISGUSTING!!!!
Not since I was a little kid. Now the thought grosses me out.
Lemuse...there was a chemical that some public pools were trying in the 1990's that would turn your pee a bright blue. I don't think it ever caught on, but I know some of the pools along the Jersey shore were doing it.
This makes me sick. I don't care if it's "safe" or unsterile or not, it's just common courtesy not to urinate in a public pool. It's dirty, it's someone elses body fluid. How would you feel if someone wiped snot on your face? For god's sake. Thank god I have my own pool!
OK it might not be so bad if someone pees in the pool occasionally because it will get diluted and the pool has chemicals to keep it clean, but if EVERYONE who used the pool just peed in it whenever they felt the urge, that would be really gross. So I think it's really rude to assume you can be the "one" person who doesn't have to get out to use the toilet because everyone else is.
If by Yes, occasionally you mean often, then yes. I grew up on swim teams and we all did it.
No that is gross that is why I don't swim in public pools
I haven't been in a pool in like over 10 years!
What? WHY would you do that, if there are perfectly acceptible toilets just paces away in the changing rooms?! Surely it doesn't take that much effort to get out for a minute, and burn a few calories by shivering a little in the process. Whether pee is sterile or not is really beside the point - it's just unpleasant and shows a total disregard for other pool users. You wanna pee in the pool, then get your own one.
I am shocked how many people pee in the pool! It is outrageous! How can people be so careless and disrespectful of the people around them? The chlorine doesn't kill on contact, it takes a little while to work. (Also, please note that it is very difficult to continuously maintain a proper level of chlorine, so if its low then you are at an even greater risk). Please, don't pee in a public pool!!!
Urine is sterile, until it leaves the body. It is your external body surfaces that are contaminating the urine (making it non-sterile).
You must bring your urine-contaminating external body surfaces with you into the pool, whether you think it is gross to pee in the pool or not.
So what is the big deal? Whether you are squimish or not, if you're in the community pool you're taking a community bath.
Urine is sterile...it won't kill you. And the high amounts of chemicals in the pool dilute the urine and "kill" anything in it immediately. I was a lifeguard for a few years and discussed this with other managers while adding chemicals to the pool.
I absolutely refuse to pee in any body of water. Once we were out on a boat in the middle of a lake & I made them go back to the house because I had to pee. I would NOT pee in the lake. I think it's gross.
Haha. Oh my goodness, you guys. Everyone pees in the pool! All the chemicals kill it. That is why the Health department requires that pools make their pH & chlorine readings available to the public. I mean think about it, kids poop and pee in there, people sweat in there, and people throw up in the pool. Women's makeup and hair products get in there too.
Yes pools are yucky when you think about all the stuff that is in there, but what can you do? Just make sure that the pool that you are swimming in is properly maintained and you will be fine.
The HS swimmers I used to guard told us that they would try to be the first in the lap lanes so no one else could pee on them while they were swimming. Now THAT was gross.
Oh yeah, not to mention that people's blood and saliva end up in the pool too. Don't mean to be a debbie downer, but it is just the facts of life.
Our nephews spent a wonderful week with us last summer. We spent hours in the pool each day, and it wasn't until the end of the week it dawned on me...they NEVER got out to go to the bathroom. I spent a week in 11 year old boy pee. Eww.
I agree with Leila07 - there are worse things than people's pee that goes in the pool - think of any women that has her period. It's a proven fact that even wearing a tampon you will lose some blood in the pool. Now that's got to be of a bigger concern than pee! Have you ever noticed the smell and taste of the chemicals in the air at a pool - there's a reason why they are much much higher than what the average home-owned pool is - it's to kill anything and everything.
When I was little I used to do it all the time - ha ha! But now before going out in a bikini I always pee because if I don't I tend to have a "pee bloat tummy".
It sounds gross, but really most people don't shower before they swim and everyone sweats in the water so it's not much worse. For women there's not always a good option, if you're watching little kids you don't want to walk away and it's more trouble for women, especially in a one piece suit. Guys can and do go anywhere, in the yard at home pools, along a fence or just run into the showers and do it, but that's not really an option for women.
There's at least a few people who get a little sexual thrill when they pee in a public pool (or hotel/community pool) because it's something you're not supposed to do.
I've peed in the pool, I wanted to see what it felt like. No one found out, but I still felt guilty.
Wonder how many people would be willing to jump in the pool if I peed into a 20oz cup and doused it in the pool. I bet they wouldn't be many people wanting to jump in. Just because people don't see you doing it doesn't make it right. We are currently battling with our nieces and nephews about it (5-10yrs old). They will all say "I don't do it", but when pressured a little they all admit to it.
Oh my god i have never peed in the pool and i have one of my own at home and kids i know pee right where they stand at the public pools eeeew...
i know pee is sterile but you have to have dignity right!?
