It's great to have big fitness goals in mind, like wanting to run your first 5 or 10K. Or maybe you want to be strong enough to do 30 push-ups without your knees on the ground. Big goals are admirable, but it's the little goals along the way that help us stick to a regular exercise routine. So before heading out for your run, bike ride, or strength-training session, make a specific goal for that workout. You're more likely to cut your workout short if you don't outline a short-term goal for that day, so instead of saying, "Well, I'll see how I feel today," before you even start, decide what you'll be doing. Tell yourself, "I'll run 20 minutes," or "I'll complete five upper body exercises." You'll feel good once you accomplish your mini-goal, and once you get in the habit, you'll be more likely to follow through on other goals you set.

I do well when I set small goals in a session, but don't always do it. I do it more often with my yoga practice than running and that is kind of a shame. I'll work on practicing this in the next few days.
1I usually go into every workout with some kind of plan/goal, the trick is to to make the goal challenging enough. A lot of the time, meeting the goals that I set is enough of a rush to keep me going and I often find myself setting new goals during my workouts.
2I agree. It also helps you to focus so you aren't wandering around trying to decide what to do wasting time. You may also be less likely to repeat the same old exercises if you think about it and, for me, I write down what I am going to do and bring it with you me to the gym. I change my lifting routine every month so I can never remember what I am going to do and it ensures that I don't neglect any parts of my bodyby being forgetful.
3I always have a set time alloted for exercise. I do find that having something to work toward helps me more. I just got married a week ago and looking great in my dress was definitely the best goal ever. Now I'm kind of bummed that I don't have any events coming up to look great for....just bikini season I guess.
