Kara DioGuardi joined the judges' table on this season of American Idol, but growing up she was scared to try new things for the fear of being judged. An extraordinary sense of insecurity led Kara to develop an eating disorder, and while she discussed her feelings during the time she spent in a treatment center, Kara recently opened up about the subject for the first time in an interview.
Kara explained, "I never threw up or starved myself. It was an eating disorder. I actually went into a treatment center for it . . . I would get up and eat in the middle of the night." Kara credits her recovery to becoming a songwriter; instead of eating her feelings, she expresses them through writing. Now she's helping kids with building confidence in a treatment center where she also keeps a studio, and the work is therapeutic for her, too. To see what Kara said about American Idol, read more.
While Kara has come a long way from the days of her disordered eating, she still has feelings of insecurity and said, "I had this craziness in my head that I had to be perfect all the time and I face it now on Idol 25 years later. It's kind of like, 'Oh god, why did I say that? Why did I do this?' But I made this commitment in my life to face my fears and if I am afraid of something, I make sure I do it." All of our problems are a work in progress, and it seems that attacking them head-on is the fastest way to make a dent.

I just think Kara is cool. I like her. And that is one eating disorder you don't hear much about.
1i do the same exact thing! :xxxx i hope i do not hvae an eating disorder!
2I was diagnosed with tehhefor it. YAY KARA. I'm glad this ED is getting a little more well known. Good for her for speaking out. Technically, it can be called binge eating, but NED (Night Eating Disorder) is a tech term for it too.
3She is now my fave. I guess cause I share something in common with her
whoa what happened to my comment. The first sentence was "I was diagnosed with the exact same thing and have sought treatment for it"
4She is a good addition to Idol. Good on her. I used to get up in the night, too, and have a warm beverage to help me sleep but that led to warm cookies, which led to warming up leftovers, which led to ... you get the idea. Now I just count sheep or think about soporific subjects. zzzzzzzzzz
5I do this all of the time. So is it really a disorder? What helps this?
6I admit that at first I didn't like Kara for no apparent reason, but she is really growing on me.
7I battled bulimia for about 6 years so I know how it feels! But good for her for seeking treatment and for educating others!!
8There are a lot of eating disorders that are not exactly anorexia or bulimia and most of them fall under the radar because people don't think they're "real". Night eating disorder is definitely real and I'm glad Kara sought treatment for it. Good for her!
9I have compulsive overeating disorder. =(
10I can relate too. I don't starve myself or purge, but some days I write down every calorie I eat and on other days I can't stop eating anything and everything. I think it's good that people can see that eating disorders don't have to just include anorexia or bulemia.
11I hope she is really fine with this now.
12She is an excellent song writer, i love what she does, i think it's a good idea to have taen her for american idol...
I am glad she is talking about this: it needs to be discussed more.
Anonymous, I used to be much heavier due to BED. I got help at a Wellness Institute--a psychologist worked with me with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It's so worth it to just feel more normal about food, let alone be thinner.
13i also have B.E.D
