Since it's Earth Day, I thought it would be a fittingly green time to review our produce-buying options. Organic produce can be way more expensive than conventional produce, but some fruits and vegetables you should always try to buy organic, no matter what. Be a smart shopper by knowing when it's worth the higher price and when you can save your money and put the conventional produce in your cart. Need a refresher? Take my quiz!

Yeah that quiz is highly subjective. According to SciAm you should buy organic/non-pesticide leaden fruits and veggies if they have thin skins or that have flesh that can be permeated by pesticides that cannot be washed or cooked away. Simple test they recommended to see you should buy organic fruits and veggies vs conventional - buy the veg/fruit and soak it in water dyed with food coloring. Let said fruit or veggie soak in the dyed water for an hour. If the dye starts to enter the produce then your standard man made pesticides will also get inside your produce.
Buying organic boxed cereal, organic bread, and organic juices is a waste of money because they are processed. As are organic soaps etc.
1Thank you so much for your endorsement of organic. The Organic Trade Association would like to echo your point about the personal health benefits associated with buying and consuming organic food. We would also like to remind people that buying organic is about more than keeping pesticides out of our bodies. It is about supporting a system of sustainable agricultural management that promotes soil health and fertility through the use of such methods as crop rotation and cover cropping, which nourish plants, foster species diversity, help combat climate change, prevent damage to valuable water resources, and protect farmers and farmers’ families from exposure to harmful chemicals. In this sense, buying organic is a commitment to the bigger, more complex picture of which our personal health is a part.
Whether you choose organic produce, personal care products, or food for your pet, remember this: Organic. It's worth it. www.organicitsworthit.com
2I agree that it's completely subjective. It also only focuses on the pesticide levels measured in the product, which is only one little piece of the organic/non-organic debate. The environmental factors aren't even mentioned -- and no, they don't always come out on the side of organic.
3AGreed, wackdoodle. I have heard the rule of thumb that it's not necessary to buy organic if you don't eat the skin. So normal oranges and bananas are fine, strawberries and apples get organic.
4Potatoes, really?
5I recently saw a short segment on this on t.v. and answered accordingly. If one can afford it, one should try to buy organic all the time.
6I can't afford it ergo I don't buy it.

10Firstly, You can't wash away pesticides. It's not just a matter of pesticides on the fruit but it has already been sprayed as it was growing. Don't forget the pesticide were already in the soil of which the seed grew and was then sprayed with pesticides as it grew, long before it was ready for picking. Organic in the U.S. means the soil was cleared from pesticides for years before you even place the seed in the ground. You can't wash away pesticides. The fruits and Veggie already grew-up in the pesticides they are a part of it's make-up. They don't spray it after it's picked, It was sprayed as it grew, from the seed to the roots to the day it was picked.
11woot 8 out of 8. I shop this way, buying the dirty dozen as organic and rest just normal. It's way too expensive to buy a completely organic.
