Lately we've been seeing Reese Witherspoon throwing the softball around, both preparing for a movie and playing with her kids. Even if you don't have kids of your own, coaching a youth team can be a great way to get in shape and feel good at the same time.
Even though you're not actually on the team, you'll run around plenty when trying to keep a team of teens or kids in check. You might want to try coaching a sport you played in high school, but you can also sign up to help coach a game you've only played recreationally. Many local teams can always use coaches, even if they aren't super experts.
So check out the volunteer opportunities at the National Alliance For Youth Sports or your local YMCA. Better yet, enlist a friend to coach with you, so it becomes a social activity, too.

I don't think I'd make a very good coach...I suck at most sports and I'm pretty sure most of the kids would be better than me, lol. I could see it being a fun thing to do if you used to play certain sports in high school or college and you want to stay in practice.
1When I saw that title I totally cracked up. I am so bad at team sports, and I don't like kids, so it would pretty much be the world's biggest fiasco.
2I would love to coach high school field hockey, but the practice times don't work with my work sked
3tlsgirl your comment reminds me of some silly Disney movie! I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to play team sports so that I can help her practice and play with her.
4I want to do this so bad.
I'd love to coach a youth soccer team for girls.
I see a team practicing sometimes while I'm running, and their coach doesn't seem to know the first thing about soccer (he's probably a football coach coerced to coach another sport).
Anyway, I had the most amazing coach growing up (for a total of 10 years!) and his coaching had such an amazing effect on not only my soccer skills but my self esteem too.
5If you live in the SF Bay Area or Los Angeles and want to coach, we provide training and placement to help you do it! Check out our Coaching Corps program: http://teamupforyouth.org/ourwork/coachingcorps/
6Not sure this would work for me.
