Now that Spring is on its way, I'm sure you'll be enjoying all the fresh fruits and veggies in the produce section, which means you'll be eating less wintry foods. So this weekend, take some time to go through your cupboards and pantry to check the expiration dates on cans of soup, veggies, beans, and other items. It's not healthy to eat food that is past its prime, and you can make room for new food once you ditch the old stuff. If a food is almost expired, now is your chance to use it up before it expires and your money goes to waste.

Uh oh I have that same canned squash from Thanksgiving time. Better check my dates!
1I don't eat much canned. I used eat stuff that was a little expired in effort to save money & not be wasteful. Not anymore! It can be dangerous & unhealthy, especially rancid fats and oils. Fresh is always the best!
2Just one thing to add: If you're going to be going through all your canned/non-perishables and tossing the expired things, please make sure you throw them out and DON'T donate them to the food banks. My aunt volunteers at Second Harvest and one of her biggest pet peeves is having to sort through donations and finding out that half (sometimes more) of them are expired canned goods. Seriously, if YOU wouldn't eat it, what makes you think a homeless/needy person would want it?
Sorry about the rant, but that's one thing that just really irritates me.
3Wow Spectra, I hope they don't just throw out those perfectly good cans of food!! Those dates you see on cans are not experiation dates, but "best before" dates (yes, there is a difference).
Canned products are safe to eat 5, 10, 20, even 100's of years later. That is of course considering they were properly canned and they aren't bulging or anything, which is a sign of contamination by oxygen.
4I have to agree with Alexandra. The majority of canned goods do not need to be thrown away!
