Microwave Free Fridays

New research from a scientist in the UK has found a correlation between the rise in obesity and the rise in microwave ownership. Obesity started becoming a problem between 1984 and 1987. In 1984, ironically, there was a rapid spread of microwave ownership.

Sounds pretty convincing to me. Think about how easy it is to get an abundance of food when you're hungry these days -- 30 seconds and wham, your Hot Pocket is ready. One suggestion then, why not take a day off from the microwave and cook something on the stove, or maybe even in the oven? Microwave Free Fridays anyone? Perhaps you may surprise yourself with cooking skills you never knew you had. Also, you'll be able to make your meal as healthy as you want it, instead of consuming already determined nutritional info from a food maker that is not always 100% accurate. I am sure YumSugar will agree that preparing a meal can bring the fun and experience back to eating, rather than just eating for satiety. Heck, you may even notice some weight loss too.

I picked Friday because I like cooking a nice meal on a Friday night followed by watching a movie with my family, however do what works for you, just take one day off a week from nuking your food.

Interesting. My parent's were and are hippies who think the Microwave is evil so I grew up without one. When I went to college I was so shocked by how much people rely on the microwave. It's scary.

Hahha Same here ! My mom hated the microwave, she was always like DON'T LOOK IN THERE! DON'T STAND IN FRONT OF IT! hhahah
Basically now all i use it for is to make the kids some fast nachos or easy leftover warm ups or popcorn, honestly it's not used daily, i'm happy about that.
it messes up the food anyway.

I don't even own a microwave. If i need to reheat something I use a pan or my toaster oven.

great post- i've really made an effort in the past year to stop buying frozen/processed/microwaveable food. keeping my kitchen really clean helps keep me motivated to spend more time in there actually cooking!

I would say yeah to this, but....the way I cook is, I cook one big meal, portion it out and freeze it....then i nuke the portion for dinner, one at a time. then, if i am out of veggies, I will pop some frozen veggise in the mikey, so, i can't say i will do this, but I will be sure to not buy the microwave type food which cause obesity!

But I'm obsessed with Lean Cuisines!! And c'mon, they aren't bad for you. Today I had Chicken Paremsan: 260 calories, 5g fat, 580mg Potassium, 4g fiber, 23 g protein. And I know what you'r thinking... sodium: 580mg. And although that's on the higher end for lean cuisine meals, it's still only 24% of your daily value.

Still, I guess I can part with them one day a week Smiling

Correlation does not mean causation. True, microwaves making cooking stuff quicker, but TV dinners and processed snacks predate the microwave by decades.

Obviously there is a multitude of factors that cause people to gain weight. And solely relying on a microwave to cook your food isn't going to make you fat.

However I do think that people should have basic cooking skills. Cooking isn't hard and it's rewarding.

And keep in mind that the definition of obesity isn't set in stone. Over the years, the terminating point for a healthy weight has decreased and some healthy people are erroneously pegged as overweight/obese. So it is madness to try to assess your health with a number.

Puh-lease! Who is to know what the hell else happened in 1984 - I think it was also the end of acid wash jeans fad - so maybe that also contributed to the rise in obesity!

Makes sense... But I don't think the technology is to blame... I think people just have to control the willpower not to over indulge in everything all the time!

Frankly, I have dropped the idea of using any microwave because I know it is not that safe for our health and I really want to protect my children from certain diseases. I sold my microwave and instead I've bought some Whirpool Parts (something that I really needed).
