We all know olive oil is a healthy fat that is essential to our health, but it's not just for salads and warm bread. You can use it to nourish your dry and fuzzy hair. I've tried leave-in conditioners and deep conditioning treatments, but they don't seem to work. Here's something I do about twice a month, but you can do it once a week if your hair is really thirsty.
Here's what you'll need:
- 1/4 cup olive oil (you may need more or less depending on how long and thick your hair is)
- plastic grocery bag
Here's what to do:
- Rinse your hair with warm water.
- Pour about 1 tbsp into the palm of your hands, rub them together to warm up the oil, then using your fingertips, gently massage it into your scalp and hair.
- Continue doing this until your hair is covered evenly with the oil, making sure the ends of your hair are treated too.
- Now place the plastic bag over your hair, tying the ends in a knot or securing it closed with a hair clip or clothespin.
- Keep the oil on your hair for at least 30 minutes. Then rinse, shampoo and condition as usual.
That's it. Your hair will look and feel shiny, soft, and smooth. It's especially good if you have thick and curly hair, but it's also great to do in the summer when the sun and saltwater can really dry out your hair. Try it and let me know what you think.
Fit's Tips: If your hair is NOT dry, do not try this treatment - your hair will end up looking really flat and greasy.

If you mash up an avocado along with the olive oil and the do the shower cap thing, it's even better!
1you can also add banana, yogurt, and a little bit of baking soda (to remove shampoo residue). i did this about a month ago and while it was hard to get the olive oil out (i shampooed like 4 times - i have long hair) it was well worth it. my guy friends asked me if i had done something different with my hair. that was amazing.
2i told a friend about this like, 6 months ago, she thought i was crazy, and one night i was at her house and i did it on her hair and she was shocked that it worked, she dyes her hair a lot and she didn't know how to make it nice and soft again, it also got rid of split ends
3my hair is dry so i may try this
4I just saw this done on tv. It's great for swimmers. Instead of a shower cap, pop on your swim cap and swim your laps. Condition you body and your hair at the same time.
5OOooo i'm trying this and with the avacado too
thanks FIT and Danni
i'll especially concentrate on my ends
6i wish i had dry hair so i could try this!
7Hmm, interesting. It seem like it would make my hair so greasy. But hair can get pretty dry so I think I'll try it anyway.
8Definetly going to try this over summer - I swim and sail alot and spend lots of time in the sun so generally have dry hair thanks fit
9There is like a million types of olive oil! Any advice on which one may work best?
10The best kind of olive oil to use would be Extra Virgin Olive Oil ( i use this for soo many things in my everyday life that i just buy EVOO in gallon jugs) as it is in its most natural state and none of the good properties have been stripped.
I do this on my hair with a maybe two teaspoons of honey ( a hummectrant) mixed in and it does help my curly african american hair that has been bleached and dyed purple, blue green, you name it i have had it. So if it can help my abused hair im sure it can help other with dry hair as well.
I have not tried avocado in my hair and it is well known for its awesomeness in my household. I will definitely give it a try.
One more thing, I have heard so much about coconut oil that i figured i should give it a mention here, coconut oil is considered a miracle oil and you can definitely use it as a replacement for EVOO. Run a google search on it.
