Both meat and alcohol made health headlines recently, and the news was not good. In light of new studies linking both to cancer, ff you had to choose one to abstain from would you give up all meat (meat, poultry and fish) or alcohol (the hard stuff, wine and beer)?

I wouldn't give up either - whatever happened to eating & drinking good quality foods in moderation?
1Alcohol, in a heartbeat. But that's because it's always tasted vile to me. If the decision was something like meat versus...oh say, desserts, I'd probably adopt the above poster's attitude.
Everything will kill you in excess. Practice moderation.
2If I had to pick one, I would give up alcohol. Meat benefits my body more than alcohol. But really, what doesn't give you cancer these days? If you gave up everything that was somehow linked to cancer, I think your life would be sad and lonely, and being depressed has been linked to shorter lifespans and a decreased chance of recovery if you do get sick. So you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't, and if I'm screwed both ways, might as well be full of meat and drunk, lol
In all seriousness, I agree with sundaygreen, enjoy both in moderation.

3Alcohol. I don't drink that much and I couldn't imagine never eating meat again.
4I don't eat meat, and I don't drink very often... so, it's not really a tough decision for me to make.
5Alcohol. I don't drink anyway so that's be right up my alley LOL
6But I don't think one, who likes both, should totally give up either - moderation is key!
alcohol, though the only meat i eat is poultry, but i just dont like alcohol that much, it makes you feel nice for a while, but its kind of nasty, and its not really that good for you so..
7Meat of course!! I'm a vegetarian already...
No way I'd give up alcohol though...
8I agree with Sunday, moderation is key. Meat isn't meant to be eaten in great quantities nor is alcohol.
9Meat! Having a glass of wine is something that I don't do that often but when I do it is relaxing. I don't find eating meat relaxing.
10meat! I'm no wino or anything, but I'm just not a huge fan of meat.
11meat
12I already chose this path... I gave up meat while staying at college. I still eat heartily and healthily without it. And then the weekend beers, just can't give them up yet. Maybe I will reevaluate after I graduate.
13Definitely meat.
14@#)*&(*
ok
I gave up coke because of the sugar and I eschew packaged snacks because of the transfats and HFCs and other horrors
Then it was white bread
Then I gave up my diet coke because the fake sweeteners were questionable
So the answer about the meat and alcohol is: I am giving up NEITHER. We have to go sometime folks. And it won't be long before a conflicting study comes out.
15I don't eat red meat, and I doubt I can give up fish. I already don't drink alcohol so there you go.
16I would give up everything but bacon, and everything but wine. That's as far as I'm willing to go.
17Oh wait, and sushi.
18I would give up alcohol.
19Meat. Sometimes, you need alcohol. Like right now, during a family gathering. Thank god i'm drunk.
20Seeing as how I have about 1 drink per year (if that), I'd have to say alcohol.
21I could easily give up alcohol, and meat wouldn't be TOO difficult either. I hate the way booze makes me feel anyway.
22I'm a Vegetarian and have been for 12 years now, so you could say meat wouldn't be that tough to go without now
23Meat. But I'm with sunday, everything in moderation!
24I've already given up alcohol!
25Eek. I don't consume much of either, but life without the occasional lamb chop washed down with a glass or two of Burgundy, followed by a glass of port with my cheese, would be a sad, gray affair.
26Meat, although I already have.
27I don't drink very often, and I really like fish, so my first inclination is to say that I'd give up the alcohol.
But I would like to have a drink from time to time, and I've given up meat for some stretches of time, so hmmm...
I guess no more alcohol, then. Fish really is just waay too good to give up, for me.
28definitely don't want to even consider giving up anything.
but if you had a gun to my head i would say alcohol. i try not to drink it too often because it makes my skin break out.
i eat ethically reared meat from small farms - often organic - anyhow so i don't worry too much about some of the negative effects it can have which are largely due to the really awful way most animal stock is raised.
29Death, I choose death. I don't want to live a life where I can't have either.
30Many good answers !
But Sauvignon has summed it up, very well !!
Don't forget, there are 5 current health afflictions directly caused from hard liquor consumption, anything more than the current/new recommended amount of 1-2 per week.
And they won't kill you early, but they do severely alter your entire life permenantly ! (Speaking from experience !)
God Bless you all !

I'm already a vegetarian and I don't drink and I'm very happy and fulfilled. You don't need to eat dead animals or mask your feelings with stimulants to be happy.
32alcohol. i don't really drink, so going without is no trouble. no meat though makes me angry and b*tchy in 4 days. i need my animal protein.
33JJones10, if you gave up everything linked to cancer you'd die from cancer
))) being
serious, you'd die from different deficiencies as no supliments are good enough to keep us alive and healthy. we need food. and i need meat, otherwise i'm weak and my nails break.
34Ugh, the attitude that enjoying a glass of wine is self-medicating or "masking your feelings with stimulants" (although alcohol is actually a depressant) bugs me. If you don't drink, fine---some people are allergic, some people have religious restrictions, some just don't like it. But there's no need to get all self-righteous on people who imbibe in moderation.
35I agree with jdeprima. I love wino - I'm a total wino, I admit it and am actually quite suprised that there are so many teetolers on this website. Maybe it's cuz I'm in my 20's I don't know, but there is nothing wrong drinking as long as it's not a problem.
So yeah
36Whoops that totally cut off my last part - so yeah, I would give up meat! I mean, I love all meat but I love wine more and there are some great meat substitutes!
37I couldn't give up either one entirely. I could give up all meat except for seafood if I had to, and I could give up all alcohol except for beer and wine. That's about it.
38I'd rather not give up either one. I like a medium rare steak with a cold beer on occasion. I gave up smoking already. I'll give up premarital sex when I get married. I girl's got to have some vices.
39I'd give up meat. I enjoy a nightly cocktail; it relaxes me and helps me enjoy my dinner more. But yeah, moderation is key...what fun is life if you can't enjoy anything? Besides, everything gives you cancer...your best bet is to eat your antioxidants, get plenty of sleep, and avoid doing anything to excess.
40everything gives you cancer now haha...i'd give up meat.
41Alcohol. I don't need the empty calories and I love chicken (even if I do feel bad eating it).
42Meat, no question - but I hardly ever eat meat at home and I've been veggie and even vegan in the past. I don't think I'd want to live without beer!
43and p.s. alcohol is not a stimulant, it's a depressant.
44Alcohol, I don't drink it.
45Well, I'm a vegetarian and I don't drink alcohol often (maybe a sip of someone else's here and there) so I'd say either! Although I already don't eat meat, so if I had to choose I'd pick that one
46It's called moderation. I'm tired of hearing I have to give up things.
47alcohol.
48since october of last year i've probably only had a couple mimosa's
and they we're more OJ than champagne...
I'm not an alcoholic or anything I just don't drink that much for the taste or the buzz
meat.i've been vegetarian before and i'm considering doing it again.i can't leave without wine though.
49Alcohol... I'm not a teetotaler and my diet doesn't consist of large amounts of either, really, but the last time I ate meat was last night. The last time I consumed an alcoholic beverage was probably more than a few weeks ago.
