Word on the street is that President Obama doesn't like beets. His aversion to this veggie is so strong that beets were not planted in the first lady's victory garden. Similar to the broccoli debacle that marred George Bush, Sr.'s nutrition record, beet advocates are up in arms about the president's dislike of the red root veggie. I am impressed that the garden includes the main ingredient of salsa verde, the tomatillo, as well as chard and Thai basil, and I understand that not every type of produce can make it into the garden. There was a period in my life where I avoided beets myself, but I have learned to love them. Roasted, they make great side dish or topping on a salad. Grated finely, raw beets make a colorful garnish.
You can eat both the leaves and the roots of a beet, so they are a two-for-one kind of plant. High in folate, beets are also high in betaine, which works with folate to help reduce inflammatory compounds that can damage your arteries and increase your risk of heart disease. Plus, the pigment that gives beets their crimson color has been identified as a potent cancer fighter in laboratory mice. Since beets offer all these health benefits, maybe our president will give beets another try? Although, it seems like he already has a lot on his plate.
Which side of the line do you fall on? Are you pro-beets, or anti?

Gabor
I have grown to love them too, especially in salads. I also found a beet and goat cheese sandwich recipe (it's grilled just like grilled cheese) that is awesome!
1Anti. VERY anti. I have hated beets all of my life. My mother used to force me to eat them. I would try to mix them in with other foods so that I wouldn't have to taste them. Yuck!
2I am totally anti-beet. I just don't like the way they taste. That said, I tried the beet and cheddar risotto posted on Yum a while back and it was awesome...but you can't taste the beets at all, which is probably why I liked it so much.
3Ahh come on. Why does everyone HAVE TO like everything?
I have eaten beets a myriad of ways and I DO NOT LIKE THEM? The thought of eating beets makes me gak. Eating things you do not like because other people expect you to is one way to end up a member of the clean plate - fat girl or guy club. Eat what you like and eat it in moderation.
So should I keep eating something that makes me extremely unhappy because YOU think they're good?
No. Neither should the POTUS or anyone else.
And why grow something in your garden that you're just going to throw away, or compost or try to give to other people (who will then throw them away)? That is extremely wasteful.
4There should not be a question mark after "I DO NOT LIKE THEM".
5i do not like beets. i don't know if it's because of the color, texture, flavor or the fact that they stain your hands - but i'm not a fan.
6I do not like beets. I have tried and failed miserably. However, I make this fantastic chocolate cake with beets in it. You can't taste them AT ALL, and they make the cake super moist. The recipe is here:

Try it!
7This is one thing the President and I agree on.
8I have made myself like them...in moderation. The yellow ones are good. It's more the consistency than the taste.
9I'm totally pro-beets!!! I used to have an aversion to beets as well but I figured you know what these things are good for you.. so I treated myself like a mom trying to get a four year old to adapt to a new vegetable. I included beets in my diet everyday for a week.. and now I absolutely adore them.
10I looove beets! They are so yummy. My favorite dish with them is roasted carrots and beets, its really good.
11Yuck I eat pretty much everything but I can't stand beets!
12I was never fed them while I was growing up, but my roommate loves them so I gave them a try about a year ago and i LOVE them!! I am not attracted to any salad on any menu that has beets. They're so delicious. I like them fresh better than pickled, but I will still eat the pickled. I buy them fresh only though.
13I have grown to really like them. For a long time I did not give them a chance, but now I realize that I like them prepared a couple different ways.
14Ok, so even though I happen to LOVE beets, I can understand and respect those that don't. Like wackdoodle said, who says you have to LIKE every single veggie out there? You can get pretty much all the benefits of beets by eating a combination of various other veggies and you'll probably be fine.
I can't wait to have my garden beets, though...I usually plant them and I think they're so much better than the canned ones. You do have to wash them really well first, or they kinda taste like dirt.
15I used to hate beets but now I love them. I think it's because the only beets I had growing up were the canned kind- not so good. Fresh beets, however, are a whole other vegetable. They're so much better! Especially with blue cheese or goat cheese- yum!
16I love beets, but my husband thinks they are gross, so I don't go to the effort of preparing fresh beets. I'll pop open a can of them every once in a while and add them to my salad for dinner all week.
17I've actually never had them...I guess I should try them, huh?
18I don't think I've ever had beets either...they seem gross for some reason
19I'm a recent convert.
I guess my grandma, who first fed them to me, overcooked them, or something.
Now I take them any which way, raw, cooked, juiced.
20i loooove beets, always had. no roasting though. just boiling. everytime i go to the market to get some some woman or a man looks at me like i'm crazy for eating beets. i'm from Lithuania and cold beet borsch is the national dish.
