While the president and first lady are both dedicated to staying fit and healthy, one of them has taken on the agenda of promoting healthy living throughout the country. Michelle Obama is on a healthy eating mission, reiterating the importance of nutritious food from soup kitchens to your own kitchen table, and she believes in the power of community gardens that make fresh produce accessible to those who couldn't otherwise afford it.
The fit first lady and President Obama have opened up about their decision to eliminate juice boxes, sweets, and processed foods from their daughters' diets a few years ago, when Malia's doctor was concerned about her weight gain. The first daughters are healthy and active kids, and health advocates want the Obamas to publicize their family's eating habits to encourage other kids to choose spinach over tater tots.
Ruth Reichl, the editor of Gourmet magazine, is pushing for the White House kitchen to issue regular reports about what the first family is eating, in hopes that America's families will mimic the healthy theme of their menus. While I think that the Obama family approach to healthy living is a strong message to families across the USA, I think requesting copies of their menus takes it a step too far. It opens one more door for criticism and I worry that there's nothing off limits in terms of them keeping a private life. Not to mention I think people will always be tempted to say "of course, they can eat that well, they have people cooking their foods".
I would sooner see the editor of Gourmet magazine request a government crackdown on big-agro and the USDA. That would be more influential in bettering the health of Americans.
1I agree, that seems too intrusive, and doing so would open the Obamas to a lot of criticism. They're just one family, and there are thousands of ways to eat healthfully. Just because they live in a house that also functions as a museum, doesn't mean their lives have to be 100% on display, too.
2Agreeing with laellavita on the "thousands of ways to eat healthfully." Plus, it's not fair to try to make the Obama family responsible for America's food choices, which is what they'd ultimately be doing. You just know the media would cry foul if Michelle was seen eating a single cupcake but it wasn't on this holy magic diet report. Someone, somewhere, would twist it so it was somehow her fault there's an obesity problem.
Where it comes to influencing kids' choices, my stepdaughter doesn't give a flying flip what the Obama kids are eating. Fortunately for her, she's got a stepmom who says "broccoli and chicken or you don't eat at all" (not that she feels that's fortunate)!
3Seriously, daily reports would just be weird; also, I would hope White House staff would be too busy with more important things than to issue such minutiae. I think it's great that Mrs. Obama is promoting healthy living as something for everyone, not just people who can afford high-end foods, but at some point people need to take that general information and make specific decisions for themselves.
4Yeah this is way too much.
How about that editor publish her daily reports?
5Syako, that's a great idea. How 'bout the editor of "Gourmet" magazine-- who is so insistent to know everything the President's eating-- give us HER facts and figures?! In a lot of ways, she's more influential and relevant to this issue anyway!
6I don’t think a daily report is necessary. But maybe a feature piece on the First Family’s diet and exercise habits. I think their dedication to their health and wellness would be inspiring but just as a one-time thing.
7I agree. This is too intrusive. I mean we already hear once a year about the President's physical. Do we really need to hear what he is eating too?
8This sounds completely stupid.
9Um, don't they have better things to do with their time? Like running the country?

11disturbing, intrusive, and probably just a publicity ploy. they're so refreshingly open compared to past presidential families. there's no need to force them to lay their entire lives out there.
12Yeah, I don't know of too many people that eat perfectly 100% of the time. How fun would that be? I think this is a stupid idea...people will read the reports and be like "OMG, Michelle let Malia eat a Pop Tart...DEVIL WOMAN!!" Please. It's important to eat right 90% of the time, but the other 10% can be "fun" food.
13Although, I do think it is putting the Obama's under a microscope to know what they are eating all of the time, it is kind of inspiring. It would be giving America a template that we have never had to follow when regarding our diets. If it helps reduce obesity, I am all about it.
