If you're looking to cut calories at lunchtime (or anytime really), ditch the fatty salad dressings and try topping your veggies with salsa instead. This south of the border condiment is incredibly low in calories; two tablespoons contains just eight calories. The tangy tomato concoction offers a spicy kick with plenty of flavor to go around, making salads anything but dull.

If you're not into spicy salsas, try a milder roasted corn or bean salsa to dress a green salad. I find that sweet corn salsa goes great with smoked salmon and cucumber. Or, mix a chunky tomato salsa into a combination of black beans and corn for a lettuce-less salad. You won't even miss the dressing.

That's not a bad idea. I've read though that you should have *some* fat in your meal - it helps your body better absorb the nutrients in your salad. So i guess if you ditch the fatty dressing, put some nuts in the salad or just use a dressing that's reduced fat vs. fat-free.
1sounds really nasty. i love salsa, and i love salads -- but i don't want to combine them!
2Eh, I don't really like salad dressing or salsa.
3I do this when I go to restaurants that don't have a reduced fat dressing option available. Mostly because I LOVE salsa! When I do get salsa on my salad, I put a little avocado on it as well...tastes kind of like guacamole. Another option for a yummy low calorie salad dressing is Dijon mustard. Lots of salad dressings have that in them anyway, so it's a good option.
4I thought about it before, but never tried it. I think it would work on certain salads but I can't see it working when using mixed greens as the base.
5I do this all the time. The salsa adds a nice spicy flavor that wakes up my salads a little.
6I love using salsa as dressing!! So yummy
7I already do this and I love it. Its great with chicken with cumin on it and black beans, corn and some of those crunchy strips.
8sounds a lil weirD! and i LOVE salsa..
but if you like ginger salads.. try this!
Annie's Naturals - Gingerly Vinaigrette
2Tbsp = 3g fat!
first 3 ingredients= water, apple cider, soy sauce!
oil comes in 4th
i'm officially obsessed!
and i started adding a little balsamic vinegar to it and some pepper.. even less fattening and just as delish!
ok, im done. (:
9salsa is one of my favorite flavor "tricks".
One of my go-to lunches (because it's SO easy) is to make a batch of brown rice with steamed veggies mixed in (higher veggie to rice ratio) that i can re-heat throughout the week. i like that it's filling and healthy but it is kind of bland. after heating i mix in either salsa or mustard (trader joe's has this really yummy aioli "mustard sauce" that's also low-cal. I will also sometimes do a spoonful of plain yogurt and a squeeze of lemon.
lately i've been eating that with a serving of curried carrot soup (from martha stewart everyday food) and it really hits the spot!
10I loooove salsa and put it on everything, including salads especially if it is really juicy salsa. I also put it on my eggs, smother just a plain chicken breast with it, steak, mix it in with rice etc. I buy store bought but I also make the family recipe which has a lot of cilantro and cumin and I blend it to be a little jucier which is perfect for salads. Yum!
11I love salsa. I buy fresh salsa from Trader Joe's and use it as a topping or seasoning in foods to spice things up. Very low cal and delicious!
12i'm not a fan of salsa, but i do have one trick when it comes to salads. instead of the fatty salad dressings, i put vinegar on my salads. vinegar has no calories or fat! if you're a fan of vinegar (and i understand that not everybody is), then you should try it on your salad!
13i've always been thrilled to know that salsa is a relatively low calorie outlet and here's just another example of that!
14I like salsa, and I like salad, but for me, they have to be separate. I don't like them together at all.
15i tried this once and didn't like it, but I'd be willing to try it again...
16I do like to have some "healthy fat" on my salad, so I like the idea of avocado, or maybe just a little olive oil along with the salsa.
I make my own salad dressing everyday with lunch so it's not processed: a little olive oil, pepper, lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, and mustard, and i have feta cheese on top. So delicious!
sounds kinda gross. i like the salad dressing you spray on!
17I just got finish dinner, which was chicken salsa salad!!! Coincidence
18Why? Again I point to studies that show that in order for the human body to even remotely absorb the nutrients in raw vegetables you need a bit of fat in there.
Fat is not bad for you in moderation.
I mean wth? Are you ladies drowning your salads in a 1/4 cup of salad dressing rather than using the appropriate serving size of 1 tablespoon or less?
Salsa on a my typical salad of mescaline greens, yellow bell peppers, mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower and sunflower seeds would be vomit inducing.
19However Casa Sanchez salsa is so good straight out of the container. It's almost as good as homemade.
20Ooooh...Casa Sanchez salsa is my favorite! YUM. I don't use it in my salads, though...I reserve the Salsa Verde from Trader Joe's for that purpose. It's perfectly fabulous as a dressing.
21Or use a tablespoon of hummus, if you aren't into mixing salsa and salads. I made the most gorgeous veggie salad last night, by dicing a butternut squash, a red bell pepper, and a red onion into cubes, tossing them with olive oil, salt, pepper, and a teaspoon of ground allspice, baking them for thirty minutes, then mixing in two chopped tomatoes, a can of rinsed chickpeas, and two tablespoons of garlic hummus. The hummus melts and coats everything in the salad and makes it taste really creamy - all for a handful of calories and only a little fat!
22I did celery and carrot sticks in salsa. yum!!
23I'm not crazy about salsa as salad dressing, but I've used cottage cheese and it's yummy!
