Today is International NO Tobacco Day, sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO). The theme this year is Smoke Free Environments.

Here is what WHO has to day about tobacco and second hand smoke.
Tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world. It is well known that half the people who smoke regularly today – about 650 million people – will eventually be killed by tobacco. Equally alarming is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people who have never smoked die each year from diseases caused by breathing second-hand tobacco smoke.
In attempts to protect non-smokers WHO is making strong recommendations that all indoor public places and workplaces become 100% smoke-free as soon as possible. Since there is no safe level of exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke, let's hope every country takes these recommendations seriously and acts now.

oh man, if i had known about this beforeheand, i would quit today instead of tomorrow! haha, story of my life.
1THANK YOU! I do not want to get cancer because of someone else's nasty and dangerous habit. If you want to have your cancer sticks that's fine.....but I would rather not. It's about time we start stepping up to make this a smoke-free America and beyond!!!
2JBlondie, by that logic, then no one should drink alcohol because someone could die in a car crash from someone else's nasty and dangerous habit. no one should bite their nails or pick their noses because they could be sick and then shake someone's hand and end up killing them as a result of a nasty but not quite as dangerous habit. we all make decisions that could affect our lives and the lives of others every day.
for the majority of smokers, myself included, smoking is not just a habit, but an addiction. we know it's bad for ourselves and everyone else around it, and the majority of us want to quit and have tried many, many times.
smoking is, however, a personal choice, and some choose to continue to smoke in spite of being perfectly aware of the many health risks involved. and if they don't want to quit, that's their perogative. most states have outlawed smoking in bars and restaurants anyway, so if you don't want to breathe someone else's smoke, you too can a make a personal choice to stand a little further away.
i'm all for a smoke-free America, for sure, but instead of treating smokers like outcasts or serial killers, a smidge of understanding and support for those who quit would be a lot more effective.
3I understand where you are coming from, but others should not suffer from your bad habit. And yes, you can get second hand smoke from just being in the same bar, restaurant. You don't have to be standing right next to the person who is smoking. Not only is it bad for your health, but you smell nasty just by being in the same room with someone who smokes. I am all for making your own personal choices, but your poor choices shouldn't effect others. I have supported MANY MANY smokers, and I know how hard it is to quit and I know about addictions. So, good luck and I know when the time is right, you will quit as well
4I didn't mean to offend you kramp
5you didn't offend me, it just gets old sometimes.
and i am quitting tomorrow, actually. here's hoping it sticks.
6Good for you!!!!!! I have heard it only takes 5 years for your lungs to start repairing themselves. Could be a myth but it's a positive one to think about!!!! Good luck!!!!
