Winter often means moving your workouts indoors, but if you run, that doesn't mean you need to be on a treadmill. You can run in deep water and take a load off your joints while burning up calories. Wearing an aqua jogger belt around your waist keeps you buoyant so your head and chest remain above water while you run in the deep end. Although running in water is a bit slower, you still burn about the same amount of calories as running on terra firma while strengthening your muscles, too. Like most workouts, running in water is most effective if you do intervals, mixing walking, jogging, and sprinting. Aqua Joggers are not cheap — they cost between $40 and $50 — but many pools and health clubs have them on hand for folks to borrow.

Ooh thank you for that! I am "resting" from a running injury and worried I'll never find something low impact to do that's challenging but still doable (I'm not a strong swimmer). Yay, this really cheers me up!!
1loveyou- I did pool running when I had stress fractures from distance running and it was great because I"m not a strong swimmer either. Fit is right that running in water is slower, and it helps to exaggerate your movements compared to real running. If you aren't used to working out in water, be careful because you can actually sweat quite a bit without realizing it, so you need to make sure you are hydrating. Also- I did not use shoes or any float devices while I was doing this, so I'm not sure you need to purchase the "Aqua Jogger." It might make it easier to go for a longer period of time I guess?
2i've never heard of this before. this is brilliant. i think this prevents injury as well..
3This is awesome. I want to try! You burn the same amount of calories? Brilliant!
4My track team in high school used to do this sometimes. Its a lot of fun!
