Hey Fit,
I have been trying to drink more water daily and have been drinking with meals too. I have heard, but can't remember where that drinking while eating disrupts the digestion process and even decreases the nutritional value of food. Is that true?
Thanks,
–Watered Down?
Great question! Many people feel that drinking water while eating will dilute the acids in their stomach and interfere with the breaking down of food.
To see if this is true, read more.
Drinking water during a meal does not disrupt digestion. It doesn't dilute digestive juices or interfere with the breaking down of nutrients. In fact, water, and other liquids actually help break down the food in your stomach and keep your digestive system on track. So drink up!

I can't enjoy food unless I have water to drink with it. Without water, it starts to feel like the food is getting stuck and not going down properly.
1I always drink a big glass of water while I eat . . .it helps me keep a good eating "pace" so that I don't stuff myself too fast and it's good for not over-eating because it fills me up a bit.
2Great news. I love my h2o:)
3Awesome, because I drink water when I eat. Without it I literally can't eat.
4Hmmm, I had heard the same thing from a doctor before and I still can't understand why it would be "bad" to drink water while eating but, I'm glad it's all a big ol' myth!
5I always drink plenty of water, especially when I eat.
6Even if it wasn't okay, I still would drink water while eating. I don't think I could follow such a rule.
7Yum, water!
8I have never heard of NOT drinking water w/ food until my mom mentioned something about it a few days ago. I'm glad you posted this to clear things up!
9That is good to know. I always thought you had to wait atlease a half an hour before you could have something to drink.
10Good to know. I always did it anyways.
11Dana18 really? I've never heard of that in my whole life.
12is your answer based on something scientific? i'd like to read it because i have been told not to drink while eating since childhood - the same excuse - deludes your stomach acids. but i'm a sucker for drinking during and after eating and i have never noticed any problems with my digestion, so i believe this is bs, but would love to hear an elaborate explanation, not just 2 sentences.
13Allytta,
Click on the second link to read about the hospital studies on this issue.
14click the link about how it doesn't disrupt digestion, it's to the mayo clinic.
15I actually don't usually drink with my meals. I usually drink something before I eat, but not while I'm eating. I guess it's just a habit.
16someone told me that too. but im glad this clears it up. i love drinking water with foods. need to clear my palette yo.
17When we eat out I do a good job drinking water with my food, but at home, not so good. In fact, I was once called a camel by a waitress because I drank so much water at the table.
18What would be the difference bw drinking wine or juice and drinking water with your meal? Some people have very twisted logic...
19Good to know! Thanks for the tip, Fit!!
20You don't even *need* stomach acid. Your body is perfectly capable of digesting foods without it (for instance many people take acid reducers for reflux and are just fine). The only thing you need from your stomach is intrinsic factor, to absorb vitamin B-12.
21I figured as much. I crave water when I'm eating. However, I've been told this was a bad habit (but I still took water with food anyways).
Well, I'm glad this article clears this up. I sensed my body knew what was good for it.
22I need to drink a lot more water!
23Sweet...glad to hear it
24I'd been told that drinking with a meal isn't good for digestion. I thought it was a load of rot but still wondered.
25i like to have a glass of water with my food but my personal preference is not to drink too much water with food - just small sips.
people drinking soda with their meals drives me crazy. they sit down to a lovely meal and then have it with a coke? weird.
26Got to have water with my meals!!
27i always drink water with my meals
28I try to drink as much water as I can when I'm eating: that way, I eat less!
29i think the idea is that it is better to drink the water PRIMARILY after the meal because it helps flush the food through the system.
i've never heard to NOT drink during the meal.. just not to drink a lot.
i think that most gastroenterologist would agree with this.. it is also the advice of nutritionist to people who are trying to lose weight. (:
30Thank GOD!! I am a big water drinker, and I didn't even know that was a concern people had. *phew*
31I've heard this before, but always dismissed it as a myth. Glad it is.
32this is really helpful
33i never drink water while i eat only because it makes me feel extra full so that i don't have enough space to eat the good stuff
though i try to drink heavily during the rest of the day!
34I drink water during because my throat feels dry if I don't.
35I want to know exactly ,the effect of drinking more water, the effecto drinking water while eating, and other water dringking tips.

36I hate to inform u guys, but drinking water and eating does interfere with the digestive process, this has been scientifically proven. Your body needs liquid to digest food though, but this should be accomplished b4 or after a meal.
37Bloated water drinkers. I have read all that nonsense about drinking water over the years. I used to drink 16 ounces before I had my coffee in the morning. I subsequently read how bloated so many people were. I cut out the 16 ounces, I drink 4 ounces when I feel thirsty, my urine is Not dark yellow, I do not feel any more thirsty, I am not itchy, and my BM's are regular. I do not feel like a water buffalo and my blood pressure is in the 128 range. I am over 75.
It is all a matter of personal training and discipline. Get out of the soda habit. The small amount of acid in the soda does you no good, either Besides I see children drinking soda in schools, in restaurants, etc. They get a false sense of being full and in 1/2 hour they are hungry again. Dumb parents!
