How much do you love that the weather has warmed up? It puts me in such a great mood, since I am spending so much time outdoors. I have to say though, those pesky mosquitoes buzzing around, trying to bite me, send me running indoors to safety more often than not!
I don't know what it is about me, but I must have pretty tasty blood because I get eaten alive. What I want to know is why mosquito bites itch so much!
Did you know that it's only female mosquitoes that bite you? They eat mostly nectar, but when it's time to make eggs and lay them, they need to eat protein (aka - your blood). When the mosquito stabs her needle-like mouthparts through the skin of her victim, she injects her saliva, teeming with digestive enzymes and anticoagulants to help her drink more quickly. Your body sees that as an enemy and produces histamine to ward off infection. That little pink bump left on your skin is an allergic reaction to the mosquito's saliva.
Fit's Tips: After you realize that you've been bitten, try with all your might NOT to scratch that annoying itch - it'll only make it itch and swell more. Wash the area with soap and water, then apply calamine lotion, cortisone, or any other anti-itch cream to the infected area. An ice pack may also help.

Ha, little pink bump. I'm actually highly allergic to mosquito bites, so I get large, rock hard, painful lumps the size of golf balls whenever I am bitten by a mosquito. Basically, I spend the first 2 months of summer looking like I am covered in hives -- it is fantastic.
1I also get huge, red, swelling bites. When with a sizeable party, I am one of those that gets the most and in the most ridiculous places. I was in the wilderness the other day and got one of my eyelid! When I was in China for three weeks, I got almost 50. I use Asian Tiger Balm which smells, but works. I also use aloe vera which can create a good barrier against infection I've read. Ice works well too.
2My sister uses vinager all of the time- not sure what kind but it came up in a convo over the weekend. She said to just dab some on the bump and it helps with the itching.
3I'm sure this is not scientifically proven but when I get mosquito bites, instead of scratching them, I dig a fingernail in the center of the bite and that stops the itch for quite a while. I don't know why but yeah...
4if you swab rubbing alcohol over the area it also helps immediately stop the icthing, although if you have been scratching it wil burn!
my parents mosquitos bite me through my clothing. i get bites on the backs of my thighs and on my butt even when i am wearing jeans. this weekend i only got bit where exposed thank goodness, only what got bit was my forearm and my toes.
One time at girlscout camp, i woke up with 110 biteso n my legs and 96 bites on my arms. we counted cause i was torn up. it didn't make me sick or anything, and no scars. you just can't scratch. and if you are totally woried about scratching, where gloves, or socks over your hands to bed.
5Dr. Burt's Res-Q ointment stops the itch immediately and heals the bite super-fast
6i usually smack it really hard when i don't have nething on me. that way i feel pain not itch. lol
7Julieulie--- I get the same thing! I remember coming home from camp as a kid and my mosquito bites would turn into large red lumps that were really hard. They usually left a bruise when they went away.
8I use Absorbine Jr. it stings if you've scratched, but stops the itch and heals them quickly.
9I am also highly allergic and get giant red welts! Who knew there were so many of us!
I use a cortizone cream from my allergist to stop the itching, but you can find some non-script strenght creams at the drug store.
10It's mosquito country down here in Fl. I also get the large, red welts from mosquitoes and they suck!
11ugh, i hate mosquito bites! they're so unbearable. and i'm highly allergic, so I get all these red bumps everywhere. And of course, they have to like my blood. If I'm out in a group and there's mosquitoes, then i'm the first one to get a bite - always.
12I'm sitting here trying my hardest not to scratch the large red welts on my neck, arms, foot, forehead(!). They bite me in my sleep... I *hate* waking up to that buzzing sound. Argh!
13I hate bites... I used this stuff called mitigator once though, and it was like it never happened! You should try it. I order it off www.mitigator.net
14My husband taught me this... and it will sound crazy, but it does work!!!
After a bite, when it starts to itch, use your thumbnail and press a cross directly over the bite. The deeper the better... How does it work? My theory is that it's the same as using that little electric TENS unit to bypass pain after surgery. It seems that the brain only processes one pain from an area at a time and itch is a form of pain... so the quick, little ouch from the self-inflicted nailcross hotwires the brain to focus on that instead - and it's much easier to take then that terrible longlasting
itch.
15okay how about avoiding being bit altogether? Grab a Bounce dryer sheet and leave it in your pocket (fresh out of the box), it keeps the mosquitoes off! Also, vanilla extract works. Dab some on with a cotton ball...works wonders!
16I'm a huge fan of making the "X"in the bite. It does work, but sometimes you need to do it over again.
kerneschick - I'll have to try that with the dryer sheet. I heard that keeps mice away too (if you have a problem with that).
17thanks for the tip PurpleSugar!
18in only two days I already have 10 bites they realy do itch and I realy dont like it
19In bites alien substances are in our body...like infected wounds too......and the soldiers in our blood go to battle with the aliens......and the itching makes us increase blood flow to the area to bring in more soldiers and allow the masses of dead soldiers to get washed away with the blood......
20How is that for a theory?
I get so many bites I get like ten and it's ruining my skin it's leaving bruise like colored skin the area and I don't want to tan that my much I yea I disinfect them then I start scraching but my mom would tell me to use medicine it's called mentholaturn it's for cold and chapped skin but it could be used for plenty of things like wounds and for clogged noses
21I have 15 bites just on my stomach but i have EVEN MORE on my back my feet are covered in them to their on my hands my arms and my neck i have some on my forehead to WHAT DO I DO SOMEONE PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ HELP ME
22eh ... the bastards bit me right on my calf muscle and the swell up as well, now its so slightly painful and extremely itchy to walk ... ahhhhh. my friend told me to always use the off lantern.
23Don't eat bananas. The more bananas you eat the more you will get SWARMED by them. Do you eat a lot of bananas? That's why you get bit so much.... Don't believe me? Try it!!
24what i do when i get bitten is i scratch until it comes open, then whatever mosquito saliva is left comes out, and it doesnt itch anymore, and goes back to normal size and is healed within about 2-3 days
