Moderation is my eating mantra, and it allows me to enjoy the foods I crave without feeling deprived. Science is backing me up on this too. New research focusing on successfully conquering cravings found eating in moderation to be the key to reducing your hankerings for specific foods.
In its March issue, Fitness magazine reported interesting findings from a recent study. Researchers found that eating daily 150 to 200 calorie portions of your favorite food for two weeks will significantly reduce your desire for it. The study's lead author Jennifer Temple explained, "If you can indulge in treats in a healthy way, you're less likely to feel deprived and overeat them."

For me, eating a little bit every day doesn't work. Once I have a little bit, I just want more and more. I still believe in moderation, but for me moderation means indulging on occasion, but when I do I make sure it's something worth it and I truly let myself enjoy it.
1Jennifer Temple's quote is very true. For me, however, I have good self control and don't really have any issues with cravings. I eat a very healthy, balanced diet so anything I may crave is good for me anyway. What I would suggest to others would be drinking plenty of water and choosing little snacks high in protein, fiber, and healthy fats so you don't go reaching for those doughnuts. Also, think of how it will make you feel afterwards. If it's something unhealthy, probably not so good. That always worked for me when I was first starting to get my diet on track.
2I brush my teeth or chew gum, because once I have a taste of something, I want the whole thing too!
3I'm really fortunate in that I don't crave foods that plain bad for me. I simply work in whatever I "need" into my daily food plan.
If I have an addiction, it's natural peanut butter. These days I am SUPER relieved to be in the UK and grinding my own peanuts.
4I don't get many cravings, actually. If I do get a craving, I'll either chew a piece of gum or drink some water to distract myself temporarily. If I still have the craving 30 minutes later, I'll have a little bit of what I want and then brush my teeth to keep myself from eating too much.
5I crave mostly healthy things. It's been such a long time since I honestly had a real piece of cake or candy, I don't like them that much anymore.
6If I do have it, it's just a taste. That's all I ever want anyway.
Other cravings, like cereal and pb, I have to make myself measure out, or I will go overboard.
I don't say I "can't" have anything though, why do that?
I guess moderation, but I do eat A LOT of food, just yummy fresh stuff.
I've eliminated my cravings. I have no added sugar in my diet (what I eat), and my cravings have disappeared. The only sugar I have is what naturally exists in food, like in fresh fruit.
7eliminating processed sugar from your diet is amazing for getting rid of cravings. if i have one sweet thing i'll crave ten more! but if i have no sweet things i don't miss them.
i drink water and have a sugar-free mint to distract myself from cravings. i also plan what i'm going to eat for the day so that i know there's no way i'm going to starve! having small healthy snacks like a small container of edamame beans or some celery sticks helps.
also english tea with a little milk in it gets rid of cravings for me at about 10am when breakfast is wearing off!
8Try Chewing Sugar-less gum. Drinking Tea...a supplement that has completely gotten rid of ANY cravings is CLA. I do not know why..but since I have been taking the only sweet thing that I crave are Apples or Sweet potatoes! Go figure...

9I've tried downsizing, and chewing gum, and pretty much everything else to moderate snacks, to no avail. I don't "crave" foods, though, just mindlessy eat.
I figure I'm an all-or-nothing girl. If I'm going to allow myself to eat something I want, I will eat exactly how much I want of it. If it's high-caloric or too fatty or really bad for me, then I will have to eliminate it from my diet. Maybe downsizing snacks works for some people...even scientists...but not for me.
10I think that moderation is a great plan for some people, but I personally know that if I went out and ate pizza, french fries, etc. I'd just fall right back into that cycle of unhealthy eating (and then feeling too crappy to exercise) and I'm not gonna do that, so I'd rather just not eat those things than eat a little bit and keep wanting more, it would be torture! Now that I don't eat it at all, I don't have a desire for it.
11I keep small (and I mean small) portions of Milka Mini chocolates in the house and allow myself one when all my other "tricks" don't work. They are 25g each and 40 calories but pack a HUGE kick of flavour and just melt in your mouth. Always works for me!
12i try to chew gum or drink water or crystal light in the hopes that it will satiate any craving that i have for something sweet
13I'm pretty sure I could have pizza and chocolate and wings every day and not get tired of it. In fact I used to do just that a year ago when I was depressed and that's how I gained all the weight I'm now trying to lose.
I give into cravings when they're really bad, but I try not to go overboard. I also try to make sure I pinpoint the craving. Sometimes I think I want wings when really I just want something with the sauce, so I can make a piece of grilled chicken with wing sauce and it's so much better than ordering out.
14I've been packing my food for the day, and that really keeps me away from the office cookies and vending machines. I HATE wasting food, so I play mind games with myself; I tell myself the healthy food I packed will have to be thrown away and how that's horrible to do, so it guilts me into eating my healthy snacks. I figure it will be this way until I break my sugar dependence and get used to eating right.
I do include a couple of mini chocolate bars with my lunch, and hide the bag at home so it's out of sight. (I'm very much an out-of-sight, out-of-mind kinda person, until PMS hits.) Sometimes I'll make a batch of cookie dough (subbing reg. flour for whole wheat, oil for applesauce and decreasing sugar, etc.), and I'll freeze half the dough and bag up the baked cookies in individual servings. Makes it easier to pack lunch too.
15I curb my cravings by stuffing my face with what I'm craving MUAHAHAHA!
