On Saturday, Feb. 8, over 5,000 runners participated in an unusual charity race that raised about $35,000 for the North Carolina Children's Hospital by taking the Krispy Kreme Challenge. The race begins with a two-mile run to the Krispy Kreme shop, an unusual spot for a race rest station. There the runners need to down a dozen glazed doughnuts, before running two miles back to the starting line. Consider it an out-and-back run with a gluttonous rest stop. The goal is to complete the race within an hour and not to toss your doughnuts in the process.

This reminds me of that guy who's only eating bacon for the entire month of February, but at least these people are getting some exercise. Are you curious to know how many calories are in one dozen Krispy Kreme donuts? Then read more.
| Check out the nutritional info for a dozen glazed doughnuts. Can you believe that — 2,400 calories! Well they're running it off, so it's OK, right? Let's say the average person completes the race in one hour. If they're running 50 minutes (25 minutes to the doughnut shop, 10 minutes to scarf down the doughnuts, and another 25 minutes back to the starting line), they'll burn about 788 calories. That means 1,612 calories are left over, although I'm sure half the people can't finish all the doughnuts, or they end up getting sick, so the calories don't stay in their bodies. Oh well. It's all in good fun and it is for charity, but tell me, would you ever sign up for the Krispy Kreme Challenge? |

Hey, it's for charity right?
1My sister-inlaw and her fiance have done it the past 3 years. She managed to finish without tossing her cookies this time!
2It's funny!! I would never do it (or I'd cheat and maybe just eat one doughnut...)
3ew.
4ummm am i just confused..?? If it is 2 miles each way and they are running 10 min miles, wouldn't that mean 20 minutes each way...not 25... realistically they would prob burn about 400 of those calories..
5Wow that is kind of insulting considering the need for food that is out there...I mean they know a lot of people are going to end up throwing up right?
6I guess krispy kreme is not really considered food anyway...
Yuck. Sorry, I think this is a form of body abuse. Imagine the body trying to regulate the spiked blood sugar from a dozen donuts, and running two miles at the same time. Is this the only way to raise money for charity?
Why people agree to do this is beyond me.
7Wow, that's kind of gross, but still looks kind of fun. It seems like some odd PR to have so many people throwing up your product though!
8I find that disgusting
9I would literally be sick after three. I don't think I could do it - amazes me how many people can.
10I think it's funny, and it's for charity and all, but I couldn't do it. I love me some Krispy Kremes, but I would heave if I tried to eat a dozen and run.
11NEVER - I'm sure like with any race you have to pay to run... I'd rather just donate the money. How much charity am I doing the children if I end up getting sick and using their resources to get better.
12that is ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. i understand it's for charity, id run the two miles but encouraging people to eat entire boxes of donuts doesnt sound very charitable to me...
13why don't they bring all of the dozens of donuts to the childrens hospital instead to all the children can enjoy them, i think thats a much better idea. and no one would be eating a whopping 2400 calories in one sitting
14I would never do this, but I would love to go and watch the spectacle.
And the bacon guy, blech. I haven't checked on his blog in like a week. It is like a train wreck I can't turn my head away from.
15I wouldn't do this. I hate doughnuts and I hate exercise that is tied to food.
You should watch the Chipotle Challenge on Youtube. Not for charity [for a class experiment], but just as ridiculous. Eat 4 Chipotle burritos in 25 minutes and then run a 7:30 mile or better immediately afterwards, AND keep all the food down for another 2 hours. Funny as heck!
16Uggh there was a time many years ago when I could have done this although at the end I would be in a sugar induced coma and vomiting up my guts.
However, my ex-best friend (artificially skinny guy that he is- vomiting and not eating for days on end is how is said skinny) regularly downed two dozen glazed KK's right in front of me - prompting me to get ill. Then he'd buy two more dozen for "his parents" only the doughnuts never made it home to his family. I'd always find the empty boxes in his car. I bet if I had said that Madonna was standing on a corner two miles away and that he couldn't drive there, he probably could have run there after eating the two dozen doughnuts.
17Haha, wow, what a gross idea.
18Yah, pretty gross, but really fun. I've never done it (I'm at NC State for grad school), but a lot of people do it and just eat one donut.
19it looks fun! i don't like the idea of gorging a dozen of donuts after the worthy 2 miles you ran, but it's for charity and its only once a year
haha
20at first i thought, oh, a doughnut, i guess i could run after eating a donut.
then i went back and saw that it was a dozen and almost puked.
21running after one donut would be bad enough. eating a dozen donuts would be bad enough. putting the two together is just horrific (for me, anyway).
That just sounds painful.
22i'm a junior at nc state
and i ran the kkc this year
let me point out that there are three categories you can register under
competitor, casual, and spectator
not everyone eats the doughnuts (i registered as a casual runner and just ran without eating any)
and if you can't finish them you have the option of carrying the box the two miles back
so it's really not this race where 5000 people are eating a dozen doughnuts

24I'd rather donate my time to a cause. This is just naaaaasty. I can't stomach more than one even without running involved!
25It's absolutely untrue that the calories wouldn't "stay in their bodies" if they threw up. Calories are absorbed exponentially more quickly than they can be vomited up - no exceptions. It's the same as saying that taking laxatives right after a meal will let you poop out the calories; all you're doing is voiding the bulk, at least 80% of the calories have already been put to work.
26i'm not going to lie i love krispy kream but here in canada it's not popular they had a few here but most of them tanked and closed so i've only had a few so maybe that's why i like them so much...yummmmmmmmm
