I just heard about a survey conducted by the Idaho Potato Commission that found the potato to be America's favorite veggie. While I have nothing against potatoes — I love them — I just don't think of them as a veggie. I think of them as a starch. I conducted my own small survey on classifying spuds and the results were mixed. So now I pose the question to you . . .

I don't really put THAT much thought into it...
I think of it as DELICIOUS, personally.
Starch, and strangely enough I do occasionally wonder if they count as one of my veggies. I often feel like I need to add a salad.
Both! Though usually I count it as one of my veggies for the day, and include a different colored vegetable with my meal for contrast. Sweet Potatos count as a vegetable for sure, though I usually stick a green veggie with sweet potatos as well. I had red potatos last night, and green beans along with them (and chicken sausage, yum!).
My dad once told me that potatoes are given to pigs for them to gain weight faster. That was enough to make me stay away from them.
definitely starch..
I consider it a veggie, but not one that I should be eating constantly.
i dont know how anyone can see them as a veggie, knowing everything we do today
Starch.
Potato fear is overblown. It is a vegetable and, like pretty much everything other whole food on the planet, can be part of a balanced diet.
I agree with evietoo, they're delish, and they can be a part of a healthy, balanced diet. I don't understand what the hatred is. Yeah, they're starchy, but the skin has some really good nutrients in it!
I love potatoes! But, if I have a potato with my meal, I feel it is unbalanced unless I have some green veggies or a salad. So I guess I'd consider it a starch
i chose other because i think of it as both... it's a vegetable and it's a starch. it's a starchy veggie...
Starch. And I've realized that I just really don't like potatoes. Besides french fries but that's b/c its hardly even a potato by then. But baked potato, mashed potatoes, twice packed, etc., etc. I'll PASS.
starch.... mmmm fries... mashed potatoes... potato skins.... mmmmm
Veggie. No, scratch that. Bread. I come from a place where potatoes are worshiped and it is bread, much like rye and wheat.
Both.
I said Veggie but actually I think of it as a tuber ( a root veggie a completely different creature in my mind for oh let's say spinach). Same with carrots- tuber. Potatoes are starchy but they are also loaded with Vitamin C and other great nutritious stuff.
Starch.
I love potatoes, esp. yams, but I think of them as a starch, and yes I do think about it!
def as a starch
It's a starch and they are delicious!
their GI index is way too high for me
Definitely a starch, not a vegetable. It doesn't mean that I avoid them -- in fact, I bought some potatoes at the supermarket this morning -- but I would never count them towards my vegetable servings for the day. There are, of course, nutrients in the skins (which I always eat) so it is certainly not a waste, but you cannot say eating a potato is equal to eating a head of broccoli.
Potatoes are a starch that I can definitely pass up. I find them tasteless and boring. Sweet potatoes on the other hand are a delicious veggie that are full of flavour and nutrients in my opinion.
I generally think of them as a starch, but they are better for you than most refined starches if you eat them baked with the skin on.
Starch! But I still love them!
Delish, that's what I think. I think that I consider them a veggie, but I've really never thought about it. I make potatoes pretty consistently, once or twice a week but I absolutely love love 'em, gotta have a tater.
I consider them a starch -- but a much healthier, vitamin-ier starch than a roll or piece of bread.
starchy
when i do count my 7-10 a day, I don't include potatoes. but oh how I love thee!
What about a starchy veggie?
I've never considered the two categories exclusive of one another. Sure, there's a lot of starch in a potato, but it's also an incredibly delicious and nutrient-rich vegetable.
