Believe it or not, bikini season is right around the corner. The thought of tying up a two-piece suit may cause subtle panic in some of you, and for others, it's no biggie. The difference could have something to do with the tendency to let go a little during the Winter, indulging in warm comfort foods and saying cheers with libations more often than usual. Does your weight fluctuate by season?

OMG, yes!!! Try as I might, I have a hard time dragging myself to the gym when there's snow and ice all over the ground. Plus I usually come down with a cold, then the kids get it, then I get it again, etc. And there is comfort food, hot cocoa, and holiday parties everywhere. I indulge because I don't eat like that the rest of the year. I try to give myself a limit of 5 - 10 pounds and if I go over that before Jan. 1, I step up the cardio. That's probably not the healthiest approach, but it's reality!
I think if anything, I drink and eat more in the spring/summer, once I come out of hibernation from the Boston winter. I generally counteract the extra calories in the nice weather with being more active and walking everywhere in addition to my regular workouts.
I said "a little" but just because it does go up or down a couple of pounds (literally 1-3 pounds). Nothing drastic though.
My weight is usually the same except for a slight fluctuation (less than 5 pounds) during the Christmas-New Year's time. Not only am I having a ton of food forced on me by my family every night, but packing enough exercise clothes and running in the cold every morning isn't exactly my idea of a good time.
No, my weight is pretty much the same all year. I eat the same and exercise the same no matter the season.
No, thankfully. However, I do eat more rich foods in the winter. That's counteracted by the extra time I put in at the gym to avoid getting the winter blues. I think it works out rather nicely!
I think bikini panic is independent of fluctuation!
Same here, Antioxidant... I stay pretty much the same. I keep up with my exercise and healthy diet year round.
My weight stays about the same no matter what the season as well. I think it may go down a couple pounds in the summer because I get more unstructured activity into my day than I do in the winter.
I usually gain 5 pounds or so during winter, because the cold makes me want to eat more and I move less outside. In the summer I naturally eat lighter, and the weather is right for hiking, water sports and ultimate, so the weight goes a bit down.
I fluctuate a little by season but don't consider it anything to worry about. It just seems like my body's natural way of regulating the internal temperature. In winter I crave rich foods and gain a little weight because it helps keep me warm. By April, rich foods never taste as good as they did in February. Around June, cool and refreshing salads seem like the most delicious things on earth. I don't go to the beach and haven't worn a bathing suit in 15 years so I don't care how I look in a bikini, but I'm always at my thinnest in August anyway just because it's unpleasant to eat hot oily food when I'm already sweating. It might sound strange, but I think this is just a natural side effect of living without air conditioning; and in reverse, I got a new heater this winter and found that I didn't care for high-calorie food nearly as much as in previous winters when I was shivering in my own apartment.
I lose about 10-15 pounds during the summer. When I get hot, I feel nauseous with a full stomach.
i don't usually weigh myself so it's just a matter of knowing if my clothes fit any different, and all in all if i do fluctuate, there's no noticeable difference.
Inertia and Bluebird, you guys took the words out of my mouth! I just can't realy eat alot (esp. rich or oily foods) in the summer heat! Makes me want to puke. But In the winter, I crave richer foods and warm comforting foods (which translates to mac and cheese, mashed taters, onion rings, and red meats). I just naturally stay away from heavy foods in summer and since the weather is nice I walk around a ton more.
Same as tlsgirl. I gain weight around the holidays and it stays on into January/February.
It's not particularly cold where I live, it's just all the parties and shopping mean fewer evenings at the gym, combined with more eating.
I totally fluctuate with the seasons... About 5 - 10 lbs extra in winter. I live in an area where in the summer everyone and their dog (quite literally) is outside, hiking, camping, biking, tubing, bouldering, etc.; but we hunker down for the cold snowy winters.
One year it really sucked though... I ended up with a blood clot in May, so that summer I didn't lose my normal 'winter' weight, put on an extra 10 lbs that summer, and had to wait for the next winter (with the addition of MORE winter weight) to be over before I could start losing. Took me a couple years to get back to normal...
YES - I def. fluctuate. It hits in the fall when the days get shorter. Then it takes me a while to make an adjustment to indoor exercising (gym or DVDs). I gain about 5 lbs or more and it sucks. I love it when the spring comes and the days are long again. I need it to be light out after my commute home so I can walk/jog with the dog w/o worrying about getting hit by cars!
ughhh, i always gain weight in the winter and lose weight for the summer. I can never keep my summer weight once the weather gets colder.
I always add a little more around Christmas, but it's usually only a pound or two.
I gain around 10lbs in the summer because I do less walking when I don't have to cross campus 5927429 times a day, and I eat more (I have a bad habit of skipping lunch on school days).
Not this year though.. this year I will exercise, I swear.
It fluctuates by a few pounds (1-3). But, it maintains in the Spring and Summer after I've lost it.
I usually weigh a little more in the summer. I swear the heat makes me retain water & bloat. My shoes get tighter.
I definitely gain a little in the winter and lose it in the spring. The shorter days and cold make me hibernate or something! I think I need a new climate...
I tend to be a little lighter in the Spring, Summer and Fall because when the weather is warmer out, I have less appetite and eat less. When I do eat its lighter foods like alot more salads, fruit, sushi, fish and seafood. In the winter when its cold I want heavy comfort foods to keep me warmer. Plus I hate exercising in the winter because I can't get outside like in the Spring and summer when I can swim, run, walk, bike, etc.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one! Especially when I lived in the northeast, I found that once the weather warmed up, I just automatically dropped 5 pounds. It was the weirdest thing, because I never thought about changing my diet or anything... it just happened. I swear I just needed less body fat to keep me warm.
YES! when I've gone away to college I always gain like 6 lbs ...I think its because I'm out of state and I don't have my mom staring at what I eat so I say ehh why not get a burger today more often than at home. My mom tries to make me eat super healthy so I kinda cheat when I'm away. BUT when I get back home my mom gets on my butt on taking walks with the dog and doing cardio a few times a week.
I don't necessarily fluctuate, but if I do not get my 5 days of exercise in a week, the pounds come on in a hurry
no matter the season
most people gain more during winter
I actually LOST weight over the winter season! I gained weight over the spring/summer. It's because spring/summer is deadline season for University so I am generally stuck in front of a computer instead of getting out and about like I usually do. =)
yes iv notched the past few years i gain 15 - 20 lb by spring ,,, ugh
Yes, somewhat. I am usually a few lbs less in the summer than winter. My appetite seems to increase a bit more (either that or I crave cooked food more) during winter and it's cold everywhere, so I don't always feel as motivated to work out. And thank you for the reminder of bikini season! Only 2 or 3 months until I'll need to wear a bikini... that is a little panic inducing lol.
Huge changes; on average 15-20 lbs. Winter in New York doesn't just affect my weight, but I fall into a deep depression from October through April. I am just coming out of my hibernation. I realize how unhealthy this is and I am actively trying to relocate to warmer climates for my health and happiness.
Winter in NYC can be tough! In general, it definitely can be difficult to avoid an up and down cycle. Diet is key! Eat healthy.
