Getting healthy is not just about what you eat. You need to make lifestyle changes to lose weight and keep it off. Nutritionist Alexa Fishback, author of The Daily Fix, is here to remind us all about the healing powers of a good night's rest. Along with sharing many of her healthy habits, Alexa will be creating a personalized nutrition plan for the lucky winner of our Get Fit For 2009 giveaway, which includes many other amazing goodies.
Here's what Alexa has to say about sleep:
Our society often makes us feel guilty and lazy if we are not always on the go, but I am here to tell you to revel in a full night's sleep and to make it a priority. While it is true that some people can function on less sleep than others, the majority of us need our seven to nine hours each night for maximum functioning capacity. It is good for your body, your joints, your muscles, and your mind. And sleep is a pillar of weight loss!

In a huge study of more than 230,000 women, results were conclusive: Women who slept less than seven hours per night weighed approximately 5.4 pounds more than those who slept seven or more hours a night. Plus, the women who got more zzz's actually exercised more, had higher metabolisms, and ate more without weight gain! Getting a full night's sleep is key when it comes to wellness and weight management (says your nutritionist).

I need more zzzzzzzz's
1I need more sleep.
I usually get at least 7 hours, but even after that I'm still tired. But I
have difficulty getting into bed before midnight, so it's kind of annoying.
2After exercise, sleep is my other huge priority. I make sure I get AT LEAST 6 hours, but most nights I do get 8 or 9 hours in. I know it can be tough some days, but sometimes I just have to tell myself "GO TO BED!" Even when I have a lot of stuff to do.
3I try so hard to get more sleep but on work nights I just don't get enough. Usually I end up with 6 hours on work night but ideally I'd get 8.
4I have to have my sleep, it's a priority. I feel best if I get 9 hours. Anything less than that and I'm groggy.
5Yep, Every time I feel like Ive eaten to much I sleep allot more than usual like 13 hours. I lost my 20 pounds by sleeping way more than usual. It works. But shhh, my friiends dont know that. I tend to give up going out at night just to sleep now. I noticed it helped me lose weight. Thats pretty neat huh.
6more sleep? sounds good to me
7I feel like death when I don't get a good night's sleep. I need at least 6 hours to be able to function...8-10 is ideal.
8how true. Our society lives in this constant state of fatigue that leads to longer lasting effects than just being tired. If losing weight isn't enough reason to sleep how about improving performance, thinking more clearly and improving our moods. Sounds good to me
