This month is all about showing your heart some love by learning how to keep it healthy, and red wine fits in nicely with its known heart-healthy benefits. My wine rack is full of red wine, but I try to limit myself to no more than one glass a day so that I'm not counteracting the positive effects of drinking this fine beverage. In case you needed an excuse to share a bottle over dinner tonight, here are five things about red wine.
- Antioxidants in red wine called flavonoids have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering LDL (bad cholesterol) levels and increasing the production of good cholesterol.
- According to researchers at the University of California, Davis, certain varietals have more concentrations of flavonoids than others. Of the most common red varietals, Cabernet Savignon has the most flavonoids, followed closely by Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir, then Merlot and red Zinfandel.
- Moderate consumption of red wine has been known to raise heart healthy omega-3 levels, and these fatty acids play a role in reducing the risk of heart disease.
- Resveratrol, another antioxidant found in red wine, could keep you slim.
- Polyphenols, also found in tea, nuts, berries and cocoa, may decrease the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

Funny you should post this because just on the news this morning was a study that alcohol-beer, wine and what not are linked to increasing cancer (such as breast) in women.

1I wish I could stick to just one glass.... so not happening !

3I agree with aimmeb; I was just looking for a link when she posted. If you want the polyphenols, have a glass of grape or pomegranate juice a day! The alcohol just isn't worth it.
4Yum yum slurp!
5I love a glass of red wine... it gives me a chance to not think about how everything causes cancer.
6So true kitty!!
7ummm live a little one glass of wine is not going to cause cancer.
8I looove red wine. One glass about 3 times a week is not going to give anyone cancer.

10amen bonniebonnie. if I'm gonna go, I'll go out clinking a wine glass
11I WISH I could enjoy a nice glass of red wine every now and then. I think I'm allergic to it, because every time I indulge, I get a massive headache!
12I wish I liked red wine. I'm more of a beer or vodka person myself, but I do enjoy the occasional Chardonnay. Red wine is too sweet for me.
13I've always wondered why red wine and grape juice aren't purported to have the same effects - and always thought that grape juice would be healthier for you... but who knows. I'll stick with the non-alcoholic version, thanks.
14I wish other kinds of alcohol had the same benefits (college student here, lol). Actually I'm not big on alcoholic, but I really don't like wine :/ Iguess it's just an acquired taste...
15alcohol* not alcoholic haha...
