Even if you're not someone who has to be reminded not to swallow her ravioli whole, many of us simply do not chew our food enough. Feeling ravenous is often the culprit for being a chewing slacker, but there are many reasons why it's important to increase the number of times you chomp.
- It gets the ball rolling: The act of chewing tells the rest of your gastrointestinal system to start the digestive process.
- Better digestion: Chewing breaks food into smaller particles and increases the surface area, which is important to good digestion. The enzymes in saliva assist in digestion, too.
- Prevents bacteria: You risk incomplete digestion by swallowing pieces that are too big, and this can cause bacterial overgrowth and gas.
- More enjoyment: Taking the time to chew allows you to enjoy your food more and could prevent you from overeating.
- How to chew it: Chew your food to the point where you can no longer identify what you're eating by its texture.

Hmmm chew till you can't tell what it is by texture. Interesting.
1Sometimes I don't think I chew my food enough when I eat. I definitely don't chew until I can't tell what I'm eating by texture. But on the other hand, I think you can get obsessive about it...I knew a girl in college that always chewed every bite 40 times before swallowing and she developed some weird eating behaviors that were borderline ED.
2Interesting.
3i can't do this.. haha
i want to taste more more more sooner sooner, so.. swallow swallow
4I always chew my food a lot, which means I'm ALWAYS the last person still eating at the table while people are already done with dessert.
5I so need to work on this!! One of my worst habits is eating too fast. I sit down with good intentions, but then just start scarfing things down. And an hour later, I'll feel horrible, but I'll just do it again the next day. I think it's because I'm always used to being on the run, so even when I have time, I tend to eat fast.
