Did the new year motivate you to create some healthy habits? Nutritionist Alexa Fishback, author of The Daily Fix, suggests making one simple resolution this year: make dinner at home at least once a week. Cooking for yourself sets you on the right course for healthy eating. Along with sharing many of her healthy habits, Alexa will be creating a personalized nutrition plan for the lucky winner of our Get Fit For 2009 giveaway, along with many other amazing goodies.
Now here's Alexa's proposed dinner resolution:
A recent study of the eating habits of young adults, ages 18-23, revealed that those who purchased and prepared their own foods were more likely to meet dietary guidelines for fat, calcium, fruits, vegetables, and whole grain intake. Those who didn't prepare their own food had markedly inferior diets. I know many of you are busy with a capital B — so I am only asking you to try cooking once a week. Keep some staples on hand like diced tomatoes, brown rice, and canned beans, so you should have ingredients on hand so you can whip up a quick, tasty, and healthy meal. The Daily Fix has a very complete list of grocery items, from staples to frozen items, to help you along. If grocery shopping just doesn't fit into your life, try it online. I believe you can learn how to broil, bake, roast, and stir fry without a cooking degree.

oh come on, make dinner at home a lot more than once a week! geez! whose budget can afford the other 6 nights out?!?!?
1I make dinner every night. Who doesn't??
2Ditto...
3I mainly try to do everything all at once. So if I'm chopping vegetables but only planning on using half, I'll just chop them all up and store half for a quick meal addition later. I always cook the entire package of chicken (great to use in salads) along with boiling a box of pasta (it is soooo versatile!).
4I think a lot of people are strapped for time these days, especially with a lot of companies scaling back to the bare minimum workforce. I try to cook once or twice a week and make enough to last for dinner for a few days. When I do eat out or pick dinner up, I try to stick with healthy choices like sushi but it's definitely a challenge.
5I have no time and a tiny kitchen in the living room in my Manhattan apartment (the worst), it is a major challenge to cook...hate it, bc I love to cook!!!

8Granted "dinner" is sometimes just baked chicken fingers/salad or an omelette, but I eat at home about 5 out of 7 nights a week.
9Being too busy to cook is such a lame excuse. I work 80-90+ hours/week outside the house, and still cook dinner EVERY SINGLE NIGHT (we eat out maybe once every other month) for my husband and myself. And I cook two versions of every dinner, because my husband eats meat and I do not.
I am working double the number of hours most people work in a week, and I still have time... in my tiny little DC condo kitchen. I often find that for many people, "busy" or "small kitchen" are just code words for being too lazy to take the time and effort to cook because they are spoiled by the convenience of take-out.
10I cook dinner every night we are both home....if honey is working I don't bother and just eat cereal or something easy! We like to go out out on weekends.
11I make dinner at home 6 nights a week. Whose eating out 6 nights a week?
Even when the economy was good, people were not eating out that much.
12Wow...who goes out 6 nights a week. Wait...um, forget it I live in NYC and know TONS of people who do only to later complain they are really broke or putting on all this mysterious weight. Well, DUH!
I cook almost everynight. I like to cook (mostly because I'd had food poisioning so many times I am more than a little cautious). Plus I like knowing exactly whats in my food, whats not, and also very important whats still in my wallet.

14Sorry for the double post!
15well we only eat dinner outside once a week
16i try try try (it's that hard) to eat out only 1-2 times a week! usually my reason for eating out is that it's already late and it takes time to make a meal.
17When I read this in The Daily Fix I laughed out loud.
I prepare all of my own meals 7 days a week. All healthy, balanced, fiber and nutrient rich, low-fat and minimal calories - so I should be in the negative weight range.
18I usually only eat dinner out on Sundays. I pretty much always have dinner from home. And when someone is limited time wise, it's easy to prepare several serving of some foods and refrigerate or freeze what isn't eaten that day. I have to admit though, I am a person who kind of likes cooking and I rather make my own food so I don't end up with food dripping in oil or grease and I decrease the chances of ending up with food poisoning.
19I cook 5 days a week and go out twice. I cook, my roommate cleans. The system works.
20I think the resolution should be try to cook at home at least FIVE times.
21I definitely don't have the money to eat out all week long..so I cook dinner more than once a week. Although this year I am trying to not eat out as often in general - for lunch and/or dinner. So far I am succeeding - yay
22I already make dinner at home 7 days a week. If I eat out once a month it's because I'm really really treating myself for something.
23As a college student this is definitely a good resolution. It's hard to find time to be healthy, but cooking in my apartment at least once a week, such as on the weekends, is doable.
24I cook 5 nights a week...not on Tuesdays, and we usually go out to dinner on Saturday nights.
25Wow, agreed with all the above comments. I eat dinner cooked at home almost every night. When I'm really on top of my game I even have a menu set for the week.
26I could definitely not afford to eat out that much! I cook at home 7 nights a week and it's something I enjoy doing. I can't imagine ordering takeout or going out that often. Seriously, sometimes it takes more time to eat out or order food than it would just to make it yourself.
27I can't imagine eating out more than once a week (MAX!). 99.9% of the time I make my own food - it's cheaper and I don't end up eating sh*t.
28Umm I hope people can manage to make dinner ONCE A WEEK! I make dinner like sometimes 7 days a week @ home! AND I do have a tiny kitchen too so there!
29Yeah, I thought, "are you friggin' kidding me?" when I read this post. Once a week! Are you rich? I try to eat out no more than twice a week and that's every meal, so Sunday brunch out counts too. Isn't your health more important than saving 20 minutes?
