Regular exercise is part of my lifestyle, and normally I look forward to working out and the feeling of accomplishment that comes with it. Sometimes, though, the last thing I want to do is lace up my sneakers and do something active — the lack of motivation usually comes when I'm shooting for an early morning workout or after I've had a long day of blogging.
Lately, I've been thinking about the ever-fit Obamas when I'm having trouble motivating myself to get moving. I tell myself, if they can make exercise a priority in their lives, then I can, too. Tell me, how do you motivate yourself to exercise?

I always logic myself into it. I know that when I exercise, it's going to be great because:
1. I'll be much warmer (it's always really warm in my gym and freezing outside; I'm from NY)
12. It's only a tiny percentage of my day.
3. I'll make it to dinner without being hungry beforehand.
4. I'll feel much better about myself after.
I agree with the "I know it'll make me feel better after" sentiment. Also I'm trying to lose weight so I figure the more hours I put in at the gym the better. So far it seems to be working decently enough.
2I like seeing results from exercise so to motivate me, I'll go try on a pair of jeans that are a bit too tight or a dress that looks great on me (to make me see how well exercise works).
3As for me, I appreciate my fitness and health. I'm really motivated to exercise to maintain that. I love exercise because it's good for me, and it loves me back!
4I tell myself that is good for the winter blues and my mood in general and also to take it one day at a time; it's all about accomplishing today's goal.
5I know that once I get to the gym I'll feel great and love working out so I just think about that. I have a short walk to work and my gym is located around the corner from my office so I can usually convince myself to pop in for a bit. Once I'm there the 30 minutes on the elliptical I promise myself usually turns into 30 minutes on the elliptical plus 30 minutes of weights followed by a trip to the sauna!
6Yoga makes me feel good, so I do it 6 days a week because I like it!
7I'm still not a morning person, but I've recently started waking up early to get working out done before my classes start everyday! It's never easy getting up, but I stay motivated by reminding myself that working out helps me feel better and clears my mind all day long!
8Audio books. Staring at myself in the mirror is boring and even people watching gets old. I also make it a non-negotiable part of my day. Rather than thinking of it as taking up free time at night, it's something done before the free time starts.
9I think about looking good naked. It's shallow, yet effective.
10I'm with you Fit! The Obamas
On Inauguration Day I read somewhere that he works out
6 days a week and, well, to be President and that dedicated to fitness/health gave me enough motivation.
11I try to remember how much better I feel, and also how quickly I can see the result of exercising. Also - and I don't care if it sounds stupid since it works
- lately I've been printing a picture to motivate me: the pair of
skinny jeans (even if it's on a model) that I'm dreaming of, or a random picture of someone wearing an outfit I love. It may sound superficial (guess it is), but before having a cookie when
I'm bored at work, I have a look at that picture and it reminds me that if I do want to fit in those jeans or simply not put on weight, I shouldn't eat that second cookie and I should get out
of bed 30 mins earlier than usual to go for a run.
12Podcasts. I know that at the gym, I'll have time to listen to something interesting and do something for my body at the same time.
13Sometimes I just feel like it. Sometimes it's that it seems to be toning my arms and other areas so I want to keep going (meaning being consisten with it). I also like that doing some exercise can actually make it easier to fall asleep at night. It's also the best way for me to get rid of stress.
14I remember how no matter how many times I've dragged myself to workout I am always happy I did it afterward.
I also remind myself that all of the positive things that come with exercise are dose dependent. So I get out there and move.
15The way I feel and the difference I see in my body. It's usually really difficult for me to get my lazyness to the gym but I have to.. I want to keep looking the way I do. My vanity has a lot to do with my exercising, I'll be honest.
It's not completely about vanity, I like
being healthy and being able to do a 9 something minute mile. Oh and exercise does wonders for depression.
16i try to take the decision part out of it - i set my day up so that it's easy for me to go to gym. so, i make sure my gear is packed in advance and i have a rough plan of what i should be doing each time i go to the gym.
17having a goal helps a lot - knowing that you'll be reaching your goal quicker by going to the gym.
new gear - like a new sweat-wicking top or running tights - always helps motivate me too! as does a new track on my iPod!
I don't bother with "motivation." Exercise is just something I do, and I schedule it into my day. At 5pm, I'm going to squat. If I don't feel like doing it, I still get changed and start my warmup, and usually by the time I'm warmed up, I figure I might as well finish. And before I know it, I'm done.
18I think about how it does wonders for my mood and energy when I work out first thing in the morning. Also, like mem952, new gear and new music always makes me want to go to the gym!
19I tend to have a lot of excess energy and have a hard time doing nothing. Therefore I crave my workouts.... if something happens and I can't workout I start to feel stagnant (for lack of a better word) and I'm talking only one day.
20Ok, I wouldn't suggest other people do this but my husband and I got a very active puppy knowing that we would HAVE to walk her twice a day. We've had her for a little over a month and so far haven't missed a day. I can't stand the idea of depriving her of something so essential to her well-being!
21Trying something new. I went to Yoga at 24 hour last night. I haven't taken a class since 2002, so I was VERY rusty! It was so challenging. I was hating it within the first 10 minutes but I love the instructor and it helped that the other people in the class were also struggling. It was so challenging and motivating at the same time. I can't wait to go back next week!
22mental imagery lol. i have a picture of myself, strong and powerful and fit, that i cling to desperately when my workouts start to suck. also, i have a plan where for every hour i play World of Warcraft, I have to work out for half an hour. I play WoW a lot lol. Also, I buy nice, expensive, flattering, cute workout clothes. It makes working out more fun, and then I feel bad if I don't work out, cause I just spent a bunch of money on workout clothes I'll never use!
231) I don't allow it to be choice. It's not something I think about doing, I just do it. Like brushing my teeth, eating, going to sleep, etc. It is just part of my routine.
2) I signed up for a half marathon that takes place on March 8th! I have been training for about 6 months, and I CAN'T not run, or I'll blow it on race day!! Sign yourself up for something!
3) My boyfriend is really hot and treats me great, so I think about how he deserves to have me in my best shape.
4) I look at old pictures of me as a fat person.
5) I look at pictures of skinny people. Whatever, it's the truth.
24I used to be really overweight, so when I work out, I remind myself that I don't ever want to be that big again. Truthfully, I don't need a whole lot of motivation usually...I love the way working out makes me feel for the rest of the day and I also love the way it makes my body look. I know it's kind of shallow, but I LIKE fitting into skinny pants and cute outfits.
25i just love the way it makes me feel. i heard once somewhere "i've never regretted going for a run, but i always regret not going for a fun."
26*not going for a run
27I keep buying exercise equipment and exercise clothes and going to Sports Basement and watch active people who use their equipment. Then I come home and stand naked in front of my full length mirror and suddenly...SUDDENLY I have the absolute need to exercise like a hyperactive child.
28I have to be sure to eat really well in order to feel good for exercise. As long as I eat right, the only motivation I need is thinking about the feeling I'll have after I'm done.
29My boyfriend and I have a long distance relationship, the kind where we can only see each other for weeks every few months. I'm going to visit him for Spring Break in March and I want to look my best when I see him. So when I just need that extra push, I think of him and how good I'll feel when I can show him how fit I've become.
30I wake up at 530 am to work out. I don't even know if I know what I'm doing that early. I set out my clothes, I put them on, grab my water bottle and head out the door. By the time I'm on the machines, I'm awake
hehe.
31I've been doing regular exercise and long distance running for like 14yrs (since I was 12!) so I don't really need motivation anymore because it's just a natural part of me like breathing! I do run a lot of races because that motivates me to train harder and run faster
32Stand in front of the mirror naked..
33I do a few things, some a tad weird:
341) get new gym clothes that make me feel good about my body
2) look at some celebrities for motivation
3) if I'm really not into it after 15 minutes I let myself stop. usually by the time I've finished 15 minutes, another 15 doesn't seem so bad.
4) I think about how good I'll feel after.
5) I schedule it in ahead of time.
MADONNA !!!
35I just look at a picture of her or watch one of her videos ("Sorry" works).
If that doesn't get me to the gym, nothing will.
remember those broken hearts.. haha
36Well, it makes me feel great so I just do it
